Hehe... no, I'm not interested in people who are, for all intents and purposes, random internet people. I just thought the (innocent, I'm sure) coincidence would be funny to point out. :p

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I remember when I got the chiken pox, I picked half of them off. Now I have a bunch of tiny little scars on my stomach, back, etc.

I remember getting them, I popped a bunch on my arm, didn't leave any scars.  I thought it was cool to pop the little blisters.  :ick:

Re: A story of Chicken Pox
"What the hell is chicken pox?" was my initial thought about this thread. Then the symptoms started sounding familiar, and soon I found out that it has a completely different name in Finnish - actually "vesirokko" = "water pox", referring to blisters filled with tissue fluid... nothing to do with chickens here in Finland...

I don't remember having it, but I've been told I had it as a kid.

By the way, one possible reason why the inexperienced doctor freaked out a little...

chicken = bird

pox = illness caused by virus infection

influenza = illness caused by virus infection

=>

"OMG  :shaking: :shaking: :shaking: U'r having a BIRD-related illness caused by virus infection, it might be something potentially lethal, I'd better watch out or there'll be a pandemy of this illness with you and me amongst first victims - Goddamnit thos cursed birds..."

Re: A story of Chicken Pox
A lot of these diseases were named after farmyard animals in the UK, it was called Chicken Pox because it was first 'officially' diagnosed in someone who worked in a Henhouse, though it was later discovered that Chickens had nothing to do with it.

Cowpox was a famous one, it's was actually the realisation that Farm-hands who had contracted Cowpox never ever caught a much much nastier version of the disease, called Smallpox, which led to the discovery of vaccination in the first place ;)

WF: After reading through this thread, it's apparent to me that these guys want to know your age, masking their curiosity in a guise of "chicken-pox is worse the older you get" nonsense.

...so, how old are you?

Sanwich got me thinking for a minute -- Is that what all this is about?  Trying find out how old I am?  If that's true, what's next?  Maybe what I look like?  I thought maybe I should post my picture and have you guys tell me how old I am   :D  Wait!  He's one of the admin, he should have access to the info I put in when I registered to be a member.

No, I don't care, personally. And I didn't think anyone was really trying to wrangle that info out of you through the chickenpox issue, either - I just thought it'd be fun to insinuate that they were. :p

Bearing in mind this is a games site on the internet - the shock of actually seeing a real live female would probably kill the majority of the pre-pubescent population here.

Not that I'm adhering in any way to stereotypes, of course........

Even if it's a picture of a not very sexy 90 year old female?  That reminds me of an email of "10 advantages of dating a geek" I read this morning - if Angelina Jolie and a computer (with internet connection) are in a room with a geek, he will probably find the computer more interesting.  I am not saying that guys here are all geeks, but I know this is a serious game site and most of you probably do enjoy spending long hours playing on the computers  :p

It's actually been years since I was anything remotely resembling a hardcore gamer. (I don't think I even remember how to play Freespace.) I just come here for the discussion.

Re: A story of Chicken Pox
Anyway, here's the dating geek list I talked about yesterday.  It's probably not new to you guys but I find it amusing.

Ten Reasons Why You Should Date a Geek

1.  Geeks are useful, they can fix your desktop, laptop, … Those skills are very useful and can make your life run smooth.

2. They are more romantic than they’re given credit for. Their idea of romance might be making up a web-page abut about you. But hey it lasts longer than flowers and you can show your friends.

3. They’ve got brains and they’re usually very well educated.

4. They’re relatively low-maintenance. So there will be no complicated dinners needed. And if you’re not the best cook, you can order a pizza.

5. You won’t have to worry about what he’s doing. You’ll probably find him at his computer.

6. They trust you, so you can be yourself around them. You like to walk around the house in a ratty t-shirt for comfort? He won’t care. They won’t get pissy if you don’t wear make-up or don’t want to bother primping your hair.

7. He will make you shine everywhere you go. No matter how clumsy you sense of style, no matter how awkward your social skills, you’ll be a fashion star and a classy diplomat next to your geek. He’ll make you look so good; you’ll fall in love with yourself.

8. If you are not into computers, TVs and DVD and you don’t care about being popular and fashionable. What about the newest techie gadgets? You are going to be a proud owner of the latest gadgets if you ever decide to date a geek.

9. He won’t cheat on you either. Place the sexiest woman on earth in a room with a geek, say Angelina Jolie. At the other corner of the room, place the latest model of some computer or other. I am willing to bet that your geek would want to play with that computer much more than getting to know Angelina Jolie. In fact, he might not even see her if the computer is on and connected to the Internet. C’mmon he has to check his email, surf the web and blog about the fact that he is in a room with Angelina Jolie.

10. The final reason is: They actually give a damn about you. Not how you look (though that’s a plus), not how skinny you are, not how much make-up you primp yourself up with, but they like you for you.

I've heard it gets really nasty when they try and insert expansion cards.

Albiet no 8/ would seem to assume that geeks actually have money..........

Re: A story of Chicken Pox
Not my place or my interest really tbh. If Wild wants to keep you guessing, her prerogative.

However I find it dissapointing that even this thread got derailed into this type of a discussion, which is pretty much default when people figure out or know outhand that a female is partaking in the topic.

All too... egh.
