Evangelism Through Video Games
God Mode: Fragging For King, Country, and Creator

Very interesting article.  It never occurred to me to think of videogaming as a ministry opportunity, but apparently there are organizations doing just that. :)

I guess they probably wouldn't appreciate my name in Battlefield 1942 being It's Jesus LOL.

Well, gaming like every other entertainment/artistic activity can serve to spread a message, a thought, an emotion, whatever it's designer feels like it, so it isn't a surprise that religious contents may start to appear.

Although, there is one thing that is mentioned in the article that I don't understand. Why are fictional graphical and/or sound displays of violence for the purpose of entertainment so frowned upon? Isn't that on the same level as say... paintball?

Anyway, glad to see some calm opinions regarding video games, especially from religious organizations.

Or the various people named "Baby Jesus" in different FPSes. For those of you who tend to shy away from those, most games have a "You killed *name*" message after you slaughter someone.

Yeah, that gets kind of irritating, allthough it isn't as bad when you are owning them so bad it isn't funny, well it isn't funny for them anyways.

Ah, the days of Catechumen...

Nah, you just winged him and made him a Unitarian!
Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.
AndrewofDoom - Make it a trio!

My brother used to play C&C Renegade online as "A Teletubby" with that in mind... ;)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Oh, for sure. I mean, I get together with the guys at church every few months for food, sport, catching up with each other, Bible reading and praying - all with liberal sprinklings of Halo 2 on our 4 Xbox setup. :D

You just became a bit of an evangelist by posting that too Goob. :p

Religous Youth Groups are more like a social club these days, they do sound like fun and a good way to meet new people. :)
Too bad my agnostic views would make me uncomfortable there when it came to pray time. =/

But, each to his own. :)

Quote
"We view games as just games," says Kedrick Kenerly, founder of +CGO+, Christian Gamers Online. "They all boil down to a few things: They have a goal, they have a reward for the goal, and they have a set of rules that need to be followed to reach the goal. The violence in most games isn't something we get worked up about. It's merely 'presentation,' simply a way to convey an experience to players so they can follow the rules to reach the goal." Abstract games like checkers, chess, and Monopoly operate in the same fashion, Kenerly argues-they merely employ different presentation methods.

This surprises me.
