Looks like the Pentium is going bye-bye.......

"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Yeah everyting is Intel Core Solo and Intel Core Duo for their single and dual core processors.

I'm still not even having a second look at Intel processors...from the benchmarks they are overpriced and underperforming.  Until this trend reverses I can't see myself buying one.  I've dealt with 3 AMD chips now and they have so far been absolutey superb.

I've told myself the next pc I get is going to have an AMD processor.  Intel is sort of in the situation that they are only upgrading things if they have to.  I see them as the IE of processors.

I think their marketing department has gone insane...first  with the barely inteligable numerical names, now they're getting rid of pentium...

next they'll just call everything processor...."Now introducing Intel Processor!  Take your pick from a range of models from high to low end with no real idea what your actually buying!  And if your a noob, well just forget about actually understanding a thing!"

From a purely marketing standpoint, this is a terrible decision. They've spent years getting the Pentium into the Pentium into the public consciousness, branding the hell out of it, and for what? It's pretty much the only CPU that the average user recognizes by name, and now they're going to scrap it.

Boo, I say. Boo. What's wrong with Pentium 5?

Pentium 5 is sort of redundant (redundant) so a new name might be in order.  I think thats why they decided to ditch it.  But you're right...it is part of the public consciousness finally.

Eh, just them focusing on their platforms.  Why sell someone a processor when you can sell them a motherboard, processor and wireless adapter?

yeah, I heard about this last month. They're getting rid of the Intel Inside branding and the dropped e in their logo as well. I think the whole P4 debacle sullied the Pentium name and they want to move away from that.

By the way, how the hell do you pronounce that "viiv" thing that they are advertising? :wtf: (which apparently really amounts to nothing)

It seems the new Preslers are actually not that bad and can trade blows with the X2s when both are overclocked to typical levels. Although the X2s still come out on top in games and are about half as power hungry.

Intel is like the GM of the processor world... People, like my father, will buy a PC because it's an Intel Pentium chip, and not realize that they're paying more for worse performance. He was actually trying to tell me that the Pentium line ie better because he hadn't heard of AMD before. :wtf:

Long "i" - "Vive". Rhymes with "hive".

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

When I'm building a computer for someone, pretty much the first thing I do is spend 5 minutes bringing them up to speed on the current state of technology. This was important back when Hyperthreading was a really good feature because some customers wanted that capability, but these days it's more important that they know the difference between onboard graphics and plug-in graphics than what brands of CPU are available. Depending on their needs and budget, I either put in an Athlon 64 or a high-end Sempron. So far, no one has requested a gaming supercomputer.
Except that one time a friend was considering sinking over £2000 into the fastest machine money could buy. He eventually went for a high-end laptop but I did have fun putting together a quote for a dual Opteron machine with 4GB of RAM and a pair of GF6800 Ultras.

So, does notebook come with a AMD processor?

They seem to be pushing the Centrino brand above everything else now. But nobody seems to know what Centrino actually is, so dropping the Pentium name entirely seems a bit counterproductive...

WF: you can get AMD-based notebooks, yes. :)

I see, thanks. It's a rather strange word. :p

Hmm. I'd probably pronounce that "veeve", as in "viva".... Still, a silly word to use for a product name, by all accounts.

WF: No idea, sorry. I've never owned a laptop, and know nothing about them. I expect brands like Toshiba, Fujitsu-Siemens, Acer and suchlike will make some decent machines. But I suspect CP and others will know quite a bit more than me. :)

Pretty much most of them do. You almost instantly lose the geek crowd if you don't offer AMD processors these days because the computer literate know that you're often paying more for a poorer processor if you go Intel.

Yeah there's a bunch of laptop makers that supply AMD procesors. Some use the Sempron, some the Athlon 64 and some use a AMD mobile chip thats name escapes me right now.

Centrino is simply put, a Pentium M processor with Intel branded wireless chips and a few other things on the motherboard and a certain expected battery life.  There's a bunch of details that I care not to remember :)

Alright, so what's the difference between Intel Pentium M Proces and Pentium Centrino?
