Well, on first glance there's a couple of things that could be improved.  First off, and I apologize if this is meant to be a more introductory mission, but there really isn't much to involve the player.  The Heian gets destroyed no matter what, and beyond scanning the cargo containers and blowing up a few shivan fighters, the player has no impact in the mission.

Second, no music whatsoever during the mission, seems a little bland, no?  Third, there's a line where command asks the Heian team to repeat its last, and I mean just that, last.

Finally, there's no background, nothing but empty void surrounding the area.

Other than that this mission isn't too bad, nice work on the setup of the shipyard and the launching of the player from the destroyer.  Message timing might need to be reworked, as there are so many messages they tend to get jumbled about midway through the mission.  Also, command sends the message that they've detected Shivans on scope before they actually arrive, that needs fix.

Just some minor bugs, nothing you can't handle from what I've seen.  Keep at it, looking forward to the actual campaign. :)

Yeah, while I did mean for this to be a simple introductory mission - a rather overweight introductory mission really - i've already added in a bit more interactivity (more Shivans are a Pirate insurgent). Plus the Heian being somewhat more reliant on the player. Music has been added, and i'm working on the backgrounds (I was a little shaky so I decided to scrap them for the time-being)

The 'repeat your last' is probably just BSG's pseudo-military-speak influencing me. Frankly, I find that 'repeat your last' sounds better than 'repeat your last transmission/message', especially given the situation.

Wouldn't Command have a bigger sensor range than your average fighter? Maybe they detected their approach.

Typically it's a good idea to only alert the player when a fighter wing enters the field, unless the ship(s) is/are absolutely critical to the mission (say, mentioning that the Lucifer is moving into Vasuda Prime, but not actually being present at the node).

I'll play the mission tonight. :)
Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.
AndrewofDoom - Make it a trio!

You could use "say again" - that's standard military speak in the US, and it has fewer syllables too.  Plus it's used in FS2. :)

Every time I go to start up FRED_Open 3.6.5 with all the HTL shortcuts and soforth, I get this bastard...

Other versions of FRED Open i've tried either don't work with the already completed missions, or don't work when I try to test them. Any advice?

edit: On a side note, is there any way to extract an image from a CBANI, namely that of the SOC Logo?

Check the tools section of my FAQ for a link to aniview which should do what you desire.

As for the problem you describe it's basically the SCP's version of the Y2K bug. FRED only checks the number after the decimal point so once you upgrade to OpenGL 2.0 it starts complaining that it's v1.0.

The only solution is to upgrade the version of FRED. Which ones have you tried?

I've tried fred2_open_r-20060224, which runs all previous missions well, and shows me the nebulae backgrounds (:)), but the missions won't run ingame. I'm using the voice-recognition build & 3.6.8 VPs as i've been playing Derelict_SCP lately, but the dang build doesn't like it...

I'll get my hands on the latest CVS build now and see if that'll run it better...

edit: Lovely, the 20060301 build runs the mission fine, but the sound is all shot to hell; all crackly and annoying...

Crackling sound on newer builds can simply be a symptom of an AC97 with an old driver. So if you use onboard sound, try updating to the driver found Here. If you have a soundcard though, I'm afraid I don't know what's up.
