FS 2 and Windows 98 SE...Compatible? I hope....
I have been researching and studying and doing the tutorial in the FS1 Demo and learning the keyboard commands, etc.....and just last night finally was able to load the CD's for FS2 retail. All seemed to go well, I started it up after setting my specs and getting green board on everything.....though one odd note, where it notes needed space and available space it quoted my system way under what is really available, actually said there was less space in my computer than the files would need. I went ahead anyway....

Got the Descent III promo film, is it possible to turn that Off by the way? I hope?

Credit screens started theme music played a few bars and all went black, click click
and i got the dreaded   "non system disk in drive, remove...etc..." when there was NO
disk in the A drive, and just the CD from FS2 in the CD ROM DVD drive....

all crashed and had to re build...... :eek2: :wtf:

my system is as follows:

Pentium III Coppermine 1.1 Ghz Dell Dimension 4100
40 GB Hrd Drive, 512 RAM,
GeForce FX 5500 Vid Crd with 256 RAM
Audigy ZS2 Snd Card
Windows 98 SE  and there was 85% of my system free after the install.
I checked the folders and it looked like everything was there, as far as the main files
but the folders, for models, maps, scenarios, etc were all empty ......

I thought that FS2 came out for Win 98 SE, but maybe my system isnt strong enough
for it, I did option for all the loads, including the briefing films for Part I, and the high
rez (for that time) art, etc.....

one thing I noted that the game was intended to run at
640 x 480 32 bit and I think I had 800 x 600 32 bit selected for the display, also I had
full accelleration set on both sound and vid card...maybe that was too much too....
Any thoughts? I would like to play the game on the system it was designed for, but
am getting a newer system set up very soon that will be:

Wow, I came looking for info on if FS2 Retail works on XP as I am getting the following system currently being set up

AMD Athlon 64bit 3400+
Gigabyte K8nsXP Pro Series Motherbrd
Pc3200 2 (512 MB) Gigabyte total match pairs Memory
GeForce NVida 6600 GT AGP Vid Crd
Audigy ZS2 Snd Crd
Maxtor 300 GB Sata Drive
Windows XP Pro

will just move my snd card over ......

I posted some of this under the XP topic, so if this is too many posts on one thing,
sort of admins please delete one, just wanted to find out asap.......so I dont mess up
my 98 SE system again.....I have it to study DOS games, and other older verions such
as Wing Commander, etc. but it wont play anything really modern....

any suggestoins very welcome....
thanks in advance.... :)  :)

I still have a lot of learning and study to do but would like to start being able to study the tech specs in the tech room.......I will try to be patient, a little longer as I have worked up through the older sims and am eager to get into the FS universe.....

It should work on your win98 se system no problem. I use to have it running fine on a win98 se comp and it was a crappy system. The specs for that were 450 mhz celeron processor, 64 mb ram, 5 gb hardrive, and a 32 mb tnt 2 card and it ran beautifully.

yeah, same here. i had a windows 98 (couldn't tell if it was an SE, didn't say anywhere) that ran FS2 almost perfectly, except that i kept getting something similar to the fade-out SEXP available in FSO right now. it was annoying, but it could still play. :)

I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. I could only imagine the GTVA warriors giving a mighty KIAAIIIIIII shout as they worked their triggers, their biceps bulging with sinew after years of Ivan Drago-esque steroid therapy and weight training. - General Battuta

hey again chris.

I would strongly urge you to watch out for the graphical enhancements (fs open) while using a system like that. I wouldn't be surprised if your computer collapsed into a quantum singularity and killed us all lol. Even my 2600 athlon XP 1.8 Ghz with a radeon 9600XT 256mb ddr and 1 gig of ddr ram convulses from these insane enhancements. (i;m reffering to the freespace open source stuff, not the actual retail game) as far as specs go ur comp will run both games fine.

That's bizarre, because my system is similar, save for a faster CPU and it runs just fine for me in OGL mode.
