Crash to Desktop During Beam Firings
I just downloaded the FS2 SCP this evening and was playing through the first mission. Everything went smoothly until the GVD Psamtik began powering up its beam weapon to fire at the Belisarius. At that point the game crashed for some reason. Does anybody know why and/or can anybody help resolve this? It'll be very difficult to play FreeSpace 2 if the game crashes everytime there's a capship battle.


Edit- Just found out that it also freezes and crashes when a capship explodes (lost one of the transports on my second try).


Edit 2 - In case you need more info, I downloaded the 3.6.7 media on the sticky at the top of this page. Used the 5.3 launcher included in that package.

Try it without mv_adveffects.vp present. Unless someone has a better idea I'd suggest it's a running out of memory problem.

Try using mv_befix.vp, available from the main SCP site downloads page.

First and foremost, through a series of friendly fire incidents on the civilian convoys, I have been testing this problem and found that it occurs whenever a major explosion happens on screen. This includes beam weapons but also happens when one of the civie ships explodes infront of me - the last thing I typically have on screen is the ship erupting in flames, right before the shockwaves appear, and then it freezes and crashes to the desktop seconds later.

I tried using the beam fix but the explosion-freeze still occurred: except this time for whatever reason my guns were invisible. I'll try removing the effects vp as you suggested later this evening so I'll get back to you all on whether that works or not.

I ran a search and I actually don't seem to have an mv_adveffects.vp file. It doesn't appear to have come with 3.6.7. Do I need to download that?

Run a search for *.vp and tell me what turns up that isn't on this list.

I have all of those vp files you listed and none others related to Freespace. The only other vp files on my system are several from a driver update I attempted earlier today for my 915GM/GMS because I was attempting to get OpenGL working with FS2_open. (Attempt failed too fyi). But like I said I do not seem to have the file you suggested I delete.

I'm using D3D8. If I set the video to either D3D5 or OpenGL then the game seems to lock up entirely at the briefing screen when I hit 'commit'.

Hang on a sec. You said in your first post that you downloaded the 3.6.7 media VP and now you say you have nothing but the retail VPs installed? Which one is it?

Well, it's both. I downloaded the 3.6.7. media VP listed on the sticky thread at the top of this page (in thread "3.6.7. release") and chose the 'standard release' option. But the files that I listed are the only ones I can find doing a search, and they're all located in the FS2 directory.

I've fixed the problem. After realizing, thanks to you, that I didn't have adveffects I went to the main page and downloaded all the vp files there. For some reason these were not included in 3.6.7 although it was my understanding when I downloaded it a few days ago that they were. Afterwards I immediately noticed a dramatic improvement in the graphics and, most importantly, OpenGL began working. I changed to that card and now experience no crash when a ship explodes or beam is fired. Minor slowdown sometimes, but it looks too pretty to do away with and get that beamfix patch :-).
