On the front page, have links to guides.

"Getting started with Freespace 2" (Getting & installing FS2)
"Getting started with fs2_open" (Same for SCP)
"Getting started with Mission Design"
"Getting started with Modding"

Good idea, especially the first two. We've been getting a lot of questions about that lately.

    • Karajorma's Freespace FAQ
That's the way I have my FAQ laid out pretty much and I wouldn't mind laying out the Wiki in the same way but last time I asked I was told not to put links to HotU and the other downloads. Admittedly that was while we were still on Gamespy.

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about linking to HotU anymore. ;)

Also, just a tip: Try to make the front page of the Wiki as welcoming as possible. This is mainly achieved by having personal-style readable text (with abundant linkage) in addition to the lists of links on the side. Something like:

"If you're starting from the very beginning with Freespace/FSOpen, check out this step-by-step guide. It will guide you through the process of downloading, installing, and configuring Freespace Open on your computer."

But of course have much more text than just that. Keep it shortish and to the point, but don't hesitate to have a friendly non-corporate writing style. For examples of what I mean, look around Amazon.com - they've adopted that style of customer relations with full force. :)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Are there any volunteers to write those guides? Or should i just toss in the links to Kara's FAQ? I cant claim to know that much about certain aspects of those guides that i would feel comfortable writing them.

Also something i have noticed while writing to wiki and to other places.. In general leave empty line between paragraphs = use (without spaces) < br > < br > instead of newline. It 'cleans' the text considerably and also makes it easier to read.
Do not meddle in the affairs of coders for they are soggy and hard to light

    • Karajorma's Freespace FAQ
If you want you should feel free to rip the entire FAQ from my site and insert it into the wiki. I've been meaning to do that to the installation guide for weeks but I've been busy playing with the code lately (amongst other things) so I haven't done it.

I prefer to write in HTML than wiki code cause I have nicer tools for generating HTML (automatic link validation, spell checking etc) but I'm more than happy to see anything from the FAQ migrated over to the wiki as it's always been my intention to do exactly that anyway :)
