Just starting with the editor...
And I am having a weird problem. I am sure it is just something that I am missing, but clicking in an open area does no deselect the ship I just built, therefore I am unable to build any other ships. I do not have select lock on or anything either. Using fred2_open_r-20060202.exe....Anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening? As I stated before, it likely has something to do with the fact that I am a freespace noob. :)

Re: Just starting with the editor...
If you don't have show models or wireframes turned on, you might be surprised just how much space a ship takes up. Even though just a dot is rendered, FRED still knows how big the real thing is, and you may still be clicking on the ship. So, try turning on wireframes and zooming out a lot, then clicking away from the model. If the problem persists then, I guess you found a bug.

Under the view menu, select that and then 'show outlines' to display the model wireframes. And you can zoom out with the Z key, though first you might want to increase the movement speed under the speed menu to actually make real any progress.

I always select the type of ship I want to create from the drop-down menu (top right), hold the CTRL key on the keyboard, and left-click where I want the ship.  If the ships overlap, I can move them later by dragging them.  (There are buttons on the top left for locking out which type of dragging you want to do, eg only X axis, or a combination, or all, or only selecting ships).
I would definitely turn on wireframes or models as Shade suggested.
PS Shade mentioned you can zoom out with the Z key.  The rest of the flight controls from FS work too, so you can "fly" the camera view where you want.  To see the key assignments, while in FS, press F2 to bring up options, click "Control Config" near the bottom right, and then click on "Ship Controls".
PPS Shade also mentioned to change the movement speed, which is a very good idea.  (I use maximum, or just next to maximum, for all types of movement)  The default will take you a minute just to zoom out enought to see a fighter you're snugged up against.  Changing the movement should be under the Speed menu, I believe.
PPPS Try looking at the FS Wiki >> Modding Freespace >> Mission Design .  FS Wiki should be near the top of the page:

Hopefully this helps!!

Re: Just starting with the editor...
Alright! That was it...now for a new problem...

I am working through the tutorial here:

http://www.rainbowsedge.net/FreeSpace/freddocs/walkthrough.html

and I eventually get this error with I get to the part where I need to build a GTC Leviathan:

Error: Can't open model file <cruiser01x.pof>
File:\fs2_open\code\model\modelread.cpp
Line: 1748
[This filename points to the location of a file on the computer that built this executable]

Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------

I figure this means that it can't find the model it is looking for. Now the Freespace 2 package that I have is the one torrent I found on this site, the Freespace 2 SCP. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Just starting with the editor...
IF you've not moved anything after you installed everything you should have that file. Do you have a file called mv_models.vp in your mediavps folder?

EDIT : How are you running FRED? Directly from the exe or via a shortcut? If it's the latter bring up it's properties and copy and paste the contents of the target box here.

Re: Just starting with the editor...
I do have the mv_models.vp file in my mediavps folder. This is the only model that has given me any problems. I have even tried turning off the wireframes and it still gives me that error on that one ship. Here is the FRED2 shortcut I am using:

C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fred2_open_r-20060202.exe -fredhtl

Thanks.

Re: Just starting with the editor...
Okay. That narrows it down a lot. You have a rogue VP or table file somewhere in your Freespace2 folder. I can tell you how to make everything work but sooner or later this is going to bite you on the arse so it's best to take care of it now.

Do a search of your main Freespace2 folder and the Data folder for *.tbl, *.tbm and *.vp.

You should have no hits at all in either of those folders for .tbl or .tbm and shouldn't have any hits for .vp that you can't see in this picture. (You mnay have them in other folders but that doesn't matter much)

If you do have anything post up the filenames here.

In the meanwhile changing your target to this should hopefully allow you to continue making your mission.

C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fred2_open_r-20060202.exe -fredhtl -mod mediavps

While you're at it you may wish to add some extra features to make things look better. In which case change it to this

C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fred2_open_r-20060202.exe -fredhtl -jpgtga -spec -glow -mod mediavps

Re: Just starting with the editor...
In

C:\Games\FreeSpace2\data\tables

There is a file

ships.tbl

There are no tbm files and the vp files in the main Freespace 2 folder match your directory listing. There are other vp files elsewhere, but in mod folders and mediavps folders.

By the way adding that actually let me continue working on the walthru.

Re: Just starting with the editor...
Try renaming it to Ships.tblDisabled.

The problem should then go away even if you had modified the shortcut back to the way it used to be.

That said the way it is now is probably the best way to have it. It means that FRED will read from the media VPs as well as the standard ones when making a mission

Ha! Yeah. That entire incident actually really ticked me off because I have been using this nick online since 1999.
