Can a newbie get some clarification?
I have heard great things about this game, but when I went looking to buy it the only place I could find it retail was Amazon and they want $90 for it. I found Shivan's torrent, which I dl'd and tried, but I'm running into many bugs, and research here has not helped me. I read Karajorma's FAQ and instructions but I get errors on starting it with the launcher. I did have some success and got it to run, but the Leviathon cruiser is missing in my ships database and it causes a crash to the desktop when it warps in on the early mission to stop the ship (I can't remember the name) from jumping.

Do I need the retail for the game to run, I also have Nvidia onboard sound and I recall reading somewhere that theres something needed for that.

I'd appreciate any help you can give me. I'd love to find the retail version somewhere, but $90 is a little steep for me at the moment.

Thanks for any suggestions and help.

Re: Can a newbie get some clarification?
Yes, I not sure why this happend, is something  which the low-end shockwaves.. that is the only that changes the ship table...

Try two things:

1) Download and use the 3/1 CVS BUILD, if that not work Search for goober 2/20 CVS.

2) Re-download the Low-end Shockwaves http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,34618.0.html, unrar, cut and paste the "Data" folder inside the shockwave file to: "freespace2/MediaVps/" and reemplaze the data folder there. Go to "Freespace2/data" and delete those folders "Maps" "models" "tables".

3) if all fail, go to "Meviavps/data/tables" and delete the ships.tbl there... acording to karjoma, if you do this, SCP going to use his shockwaves, that are the medium end ones, and is not recomended. Always save a backup in other folde out of freespace zone.

Can you or someone post a link to the CVS build? I tried doing a search, but wasn't able to use the search feature for some reason. I could not find them here either http://scp.indiegames.us/download.php

Also in Mediavps/data there is no "tables" folder or files.

Still a little confused...

Thanks

If you download the end-low shockwaves again and put them inside medivps/data their going to add a tables folder, but, that is needed.

Lest try which other build that should work...

The CVS Builds you can find them here http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/latest/, you cna find the CVS post here, http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,34852.0.html...

Go to the First site, and explore them, you going to find a few folder, the CVS build 3/1 you going to find then inside March2006, always use "redmanace" vercions... anyway this is the correct link to the CVS 3/1 standart, http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/latest/March2006/20060301-redmenace.rar, use save target as if you are using firefox.

Re: Can a newbie get some clarification?
Well now I get this error.

Error: mv_music-mus.tbm(10):
Error: Required token = [#SoundTrack End] or [$Name:], found [+nocreate] .

File:C:\Languages\Visual Studio Projects\Visual C++\fs2_open\code\Parse\PARSELO.CPP
Line: 535
[This filename points to the location of a file on the computer that built this executable]

Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------

I added the models, maps, and ship tables forlder to mediavps and now I can at least play Freespace 2 1.2. So that's at least a start in the right direction. I'll have to mess with the it more to get Open source to run I think.

 :(

You need a more recent version of FSO.

Hell yes!  The official 3.6.7 was released in September, but so many things have been changed and included since then, so your best bet is to try a CVS build, which is like a Beta, that is a shap-shot of what the code is like on a certain day.  They are released by Redmenace typically, and you can find them in a sitckied thread in the "New Builds" sub-forum in the Soure Code Project HLP Forum.  I personally have some concerns about some of the very latest builds, but as always they are "use at your own risk".

Unfortunately no luck with these either.

Same error with 3.6.7 or the CVS builds.  :confused:
