Hey guys, yep, it's another one of those postsTM. We're setting up a LAN party at my school for the weekend, but we need some game suggestions/tips on getting it to work. What's the best way to set up the LAN? We were thinking of installing all the games on the server, then letting everyone run off the same account with the game installed; either that or install the game on the server, then get everyone to copy/paste it into their folders. Tips?


Also, we need some games. They need to be relatively not amazing, but we can play up to like UT2k4 with the graphics toned down (systems are generally Windows XP with 2.0 Ghz proc and an onboard chip).

Right now for the lineup we have:

1) Halo Trial
2) Soldat
3) AvP 2
4) Red Alert 2
5) Warcraft III

I find SOFII to be quite fun despite it's age, as well as RTCW: Enemy Territory.

Tribes Vengeance?  That was pretty fun to play when it was out in beta. 
Or even the older Tribes games would be fun.  I've also been partial to a little bit of Call Of Duty 2, which in MP you can turn the settings way down and still have a great looking and playing game. 
XIII was pretty fun too, had a different mode of gameplay called "The Hunt" I think, and it's the closest thing to Coop I've seen in a long time.  A CPU-controlled character runs around the map and the teams sorta have to work together to kill the AI.  Each time it's shot, it gets smaller in size and runs around way faster. 

LAN parties I've attended over the past year have consisted of:

- War3 DotA (gag puke etc..)
- Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

People don't like to try new games because they say thier systems can't run them.  I laugh.  I still end up installing War3 again for two hours and playing Dota again.  gah.

Hmm...RtCW:ET looks good,  but any suggestions on how to get around the CD keys on the other games? (Not illegal as far as I know, right?)

Tribes Vengeance is a GREAT game to play over a LAN....  I havent played it over a lan, but I play it over the internet regularly... (Im on there as Zman as well)

Ummmmm, Try maybe an Unreal game, that might be a good LAN game.... (i dont usually play them...)

Every time I'm at a LAN party everyone brings all these cool games and all we play is Unreal Tournament and Starcraft because they're the only games that everyone can get running on their computers.

UT and retail FS2 are excellent choices that should work well on old systems. I used to also play Red Alert quite often with friends over a serial cable link, although with a mod I made.

The best thing though would to be to get D2X-XL and join the rest of us for a night.

mw4 would be a good lan party game. just make sure everyone brings their stick.

The most fun I've ever had on-line is Team Fortress Classic. That game is 100% bonkers.

I think the main problem with FS2 being a good LAN party game is that there's a lot of people who haven't heard of it.  I and one friend knew about FS2, and only played it once vs each other on a LAN party.  Other times we played System Shock 2 Coop (oo! there's a gooder) Another big problem is that not everyone has a stick to bring to the LAN parties, cause they just play games that don't make sense with joysticks.  I myself play with a mouse/keyboard combination but it's difficult to learn when you have to get in the game and get blasted to hell by someone like me who already knows the controls.  Once that starts happening, people start whining, quitting, and playing D'oh -ta.

CnC at all is always a good choice, but Unreal tourney,  Splinter Cell: pandora tomorrow, and Chaos theory's multiplayer options (both co-op and such) are aparrently good choices, also

Ya know, I tried the new Star Wars Empire at War RTS, and it's interesting.  It's probably been done, and I to this day STILL prefer the classic CnC for a good RTS-fest, but I actually liked it.  It wasn't that bad.  I played CnC Generals and I couldn't stand it after a half hour,  and I'm simply no good at Rise of Nations or Age of Empires, but this game was'nt too bad.  The only thing that drove me nuts was playing as Empire and hearing those damn ships flying around for an hour.  Gah.    So if you can get it, try it, you might like it.

Don't forget Battlefield 1942+DC/2, those are also fun. If you feel you don't have enough players to make a war, then raping the bots is also quite joy for a while.

Screw Battlefield2, the game's no good and you'd be better to stick with plain Battlefield1942, not to mention the excellent mods Desert Combat, and especially Forgotten Hope.

Heck I like BF2, despite the amount of bugs it still has it's fun enough to enjoy. But that's just my opinion
Allthough I do miss some of the factors that were present in DC.
