I'm not surprised. From what I understand, the kind of procedures he had were invasive enough that it's impossible to come out of them without serious brain damage.

Now, if he comes out of his coma completely fine and healed, I'll start humming the theme song to "Anti-Christ" everywhere. :nervous: :p :doubt:

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

Ehud Olmert. It's pretty amazing. Sharon created Kadima just a few weeks before he went into a coma, and yet they won the recent election, ahead of both of Israel's established parties. I don't think the party is even 6 months old, and they swept to power. Actually, Likud did terribly, coming behind some no-names (well, internationally) like the Russian-Israeli citizens bloc. Seems like Sharon definitely knew what he was doing when he left Likud and created Kadima.

I'm not surprised. From what I understand, the kind of procedures he had were invasive enough that it's impossible to come out of them without serious brain damage.

Re: Israel's Sharon to be declared 'permanently in
Well, like most leaders he did good things and bad things in his life, lots of people care that Sharon is out of power, yet look how little notice we take of the fact that Mugabe is still in power. Difference is, Sharon lives somewhere that we are all interested in, seems we lost a lot of interest in Mugabe once we'd got our own people out....

I wouldn't wish the kind of surgery Sharon had on anyone, but it was good to hear that a more moderate party got in instead of Likud, else the conflict would never stand a chance of winding down.

Re: Israel's Sharon to be declared 'permanently in
FYI, many people around here view Olmert as a disaster for Israel. TBH I don't know exactly/specifically why, aside from my differing political views, but just thought I'd bring that up.

Re: Israel's Sharon to be declared 'permanently incapacitated
Well, I'de venture a guess that it has to do with his plans to pull a Gaza 2.0, which probably doesn't sit well with the settlers, right-wingers and so on. Though if Likud formed an alliance with the various religious, pro-settlement and right-wing parties, it could hold a majority in the Knesset, no? Thought it seems to me that if a newborn Kadima wins an election ahead of Labour and Likud on a platform of disengagement, that's got to have significant popular support, right?

Kadima won something like 28 seats (ahead of 20 and out of about 150-?) in one (if not the) of the lowest turnout elections in history, though.

My guess would be that the Israelis don't see much hope for actual peace from any party now (due to Hamas being elected in the PTs), so it's hard to see a point in voting when the likelihood is 4 years or so more of terrorist attacks and tit-for-tat violence.

How depressing...

It is.  Even my youthful optimism and hope of altruistic compromise (or, y'know, not blowing the **** out of each other every 5 minutes) is giving way.  Few years and i'll probably arrive at the 'nuke them all and make some nice green-glowing sculptures from the glass' stage.

Indeed.
Human nature I guess. Which isn't all that too encouraging either. =/

GNN Newsflash
*dum de da dum de dum da da*
The Unified Republic of Kreblachistan today declared war upon the Custardy Republic of Karzampouristan.  Kreblachistan leader General Tango Um-bungo unrepetantly addressed the UN today, declaring "The people of Kreblachistan will no longer tolerate the unholy consumption of strawberry pie by the Karzamspouristanis, and call on these infidels to repent and embrace the apple pie or they will be crushed".  Karzampouristani President Chowdah was unwilling to meet the Kreblachistani demands, cisting a lack of decent vanilla ice cream, but offered a compromise measure of formally adopting the Ginsters Pasty treaty of 1989 and negotiating a delicious soft-crust compromise.

So far, fighting has been sporadic, but the Kreblachistani border towns of Chumpi and Luggy have been reported to have been shelled at long range by the Custard Artillery.  Military experts belive it is only a matter of time before Kreblachistan deploys its Armed Patriotic Peoples Liberation Experts artillery division, also known as the Combined Reinforcement Unit of Military Bombing Location Enhancement (A.P.P.L.E. C.R.U.M.B.L.E.). Observers from the bordering Union of Kidneypie expressed concern and surprise, exclaiming that 'we always thought custard and apple crumble was quite nice', and calling on other nations to act to halt the increasing danger of pie-based extremism.

The United States was unavailable to comment, due to negotiations with the representatives of Pretzelistan to recover its president, George Bush the 5th (clone).  It remains unclear whether Pretzelistan is actually a country or was created as a trick to bait and capture the US President, much like the Allied States of Cocopops Incident of 2 years ago.  Vice President Dick Cheney has led the negotiations thus far, but has been forced to handover control due to his ongoing trial for the Pensylvania Street Avenue Lawyer massacre.
