I'm very interested with this one. I think it might be a decent game to movie adaptation. It's strange though; I generally don't like horror films.

Oh yes. Stay Alive. The movie based on the board game of the same name.

I've heard Boromir falls into a hole quite early on in the movie. Sorry Grug .

So anyway. Back to the topic at hand. Here's a little making of video I found.

http://media.putfile.com/On-The-Set-Of-Silent-Hill

Mostly it's just the cast and crew bigging up the movie but there is some interesting stuff in there for anyone with even a passing interest in the movie. Everyone talks a lot about how SH is different. Which I am assuming means they don't really know what cinema audiences will make or it and are kind of expecting it to flop. Calling it "different" is a nice excuse when your movie flops (the audience just didn't get it).

After seeing this documentary I'd say I'm less optimistic about being entertained by this movie and more optimistic about seeing something really wierd and either disturbing or silly. The whole concept of pyramid head still baffles me. I don't know what's more scary. A big wrestler dude with a pyramid for a head, or that someone thought that a big wrestler dude with a pyramid for a head would be scary?

Awesome, awesome link.  I am even more pumped for this movie now.

And ah...Pyramid Head is definately a force to be feared.  He's basically the executioner/grim reaper of the Silent Hill universe.  oo;  If he wants you to die, you usually do, by means of his giant-ass sword.  He premieres in Silent Hill 2.

I presume an ass-sword isn't a sword with a blade shaped like a bum?

.. and would that be any stranger than a head shaped like a pyramid?

Well, i'm sure there are uses to a pyramid shaped head.  You could be really good headbutting people in a fight, or you could buy a nice hat to take away the eye.  But a bum shaped sword has very little use because it's rather blunt.  Perhaps a bum-club might be more useful.

But the Silent Hill games are also 'different' from the usual entries to the horror genre. If the film is faithful, it would be too. I'm not quite sure what makes you think 'different' has to be in a negative sense.

And Pyramid Head is the most awesome antagonist ever.

It's not the appearance. Horror movies aren't supposed to be about scary pictures. They're about what you don't see and what your mind fills in the blanks with. The Silent Hill games try damned hard to get right inside your head.
The original Alien movie was a good horror movie. You don't actually see the alien properly until near the end. It's an unknown, unstoppable, almost Lovecraftian horror. In Aliens, the aliens are nothing but bugs that die when you shoot them, which is why that was more of an action movie.

I just ordered the Silent Hill collection for PS2 so I guess I'll get to see what all the fuss is about. 8 quid (ish) per game seems pretty fair to me. I would have preferred to have paid 5, but you can't have everything can you ;). No press screenings for the movie by the way guys. Make of that what you will.

Just be warned-- Silent Hill 2 sucks. It's nothing but running around foggy streets from one nonsensical puzzle to the next, with not a shred of plot progression. And the combat is tedious and awkward, so it's not even fun to play.

I'll bear that in mind. Meanwhile here's another link posted in the imdb forum.

It's worth watching for the kids at the end. Yes, that's right, kids at the end.

Ok seen the movie. Wanted to see it on the premier night but nobody was interested in going. Went tonight anyway. Saturday. Normally a big night at the cinema. The Silent Hill screening was very quiet. Can't see the studio making much of a profit with that kind of turn out.

Anyone want to know if it's any good? No? Tough. I'm going to tell you anyway. Yes it's good. Despite all the negative reviews from stuck up critic types who have said otherwise this is a good solid movie. it was nearly a great movie! Nearly doesn't cut it though, so good it is.

Some random notes: We get to Silent Hill very quickly. It's like, there's the cute lead actress, there's the kid, there's Boromir, oh we're off to Silent Hill! Character development? Not in this film. Didn't bother me much actually. I didn't turn up to see some big emotional tear jerker type film. Turned up to see Silent Hill, so that's what I got. On arriving at Silent Hill Rose does seem to spend a lot of time running around. You start to wonder if someone in the audience is controlling her with a gamepad.

The monsters all look a bit rubbish by the way, and aren't scary at all. They are slightly disturbing. In fact the movie as a whole is very disturbing indeed, which is what happens if you're exposed to slightly disturbing stuff non-stop for two hours. The story eventually starts to kick, a simple story but really quite a good one, and well told. At that point it stops feeling like a game. More disturbing stuff. Roll credits. Did I mention this movie was disturbing? I happen to find that quite cool but I appreciate a lot of people won't. Hopefully they'll read a review or something and stay away.

One last thing. The British board of film classification has now completely lost it. This movie was rated 15 and to avoid spoiling it I'll just say there are a lot of really nasty scenes in it. The fact that this movie was rated 15 just makes a mockery of the whole system.

Saw it earlier this evening.  Here's my two cents.  Note that I'm speaking as an avid fan of the games, so...there will be a bit of nit-picking on my part.

First off, the visuals are absolutely spectacular.  Amazing.  Perfectly captures the feel and look of Silent Hill.  The transition into the Otherworld is spectacular, and the monsters were incredibly well done.  I also thought the acting was pretty damn good.  Rose sounded genuinely terrified throughout the film.  A few awkard lines, but nothing too bad.

Now for the complaints...  Story was a bit of a departure from the games.  I wish they either stuck to a straight adaptation of one of the games, or went with something completely original.  The mix of both in this case was not very well done.  Some very important aspects of the fanatic order were lost as a result, and that includes a lot of Alessa's backstory.

Also, way too many people, and too few monsters.  In the Silent Hill games, each volume contains just a handful of people...  There were almost 60 or 70 in the church, and that really destroyed the sensation of isolation and depair that is so common in the games.

Back to the monsters for a short bit, I didn't feel they were used very well at all.  The new monster, the Janitor felt unnecessary, and the almighty Pyramid Head could have had a much stronger role.  The Nurses being all clustered together, while making for a tense scene, was really bizzare.  And Rose didn't fight ANY of them at all.  Not even some good old lead pipe action!

So...yeah, while it wasn't bad by any stretch, I felt it could have been a good deal better.  If a sequel is made, I hope they'll stick more to the source material, or at least follow the themes of the series more faithfully.
