New to FSO, numerous crash errors
Downloaded Shivan's pack over the weekend, made no changes to it beyond getting rid of that ships.tbl file.  However, I've been getting a few crash errors in playing through the FS2 campaign:

After every mission, during the loading screen for the next mission's briefing, there's a guaranteed CTD after the first long bar lights up.  Restart from the launcher and going back into the campaign takes me to where I should be.

During the mission where you hijack the Sunder (Love the Treason?), there seems to be a random lockup requiring a reboot.  I can't seem to find any common event that causes the lockup, though.

During some cutscenes in the campaign, the loading screen will appear, fully load, and then, when the cutscene would have appeared, instead I only get sound; video is just the loading screen with everything but the final bar lit.  The intro cutscene worked.  The cutscene with Bosch studying the portal originally had this problem, but after uninstalling DivX worked fine.  Now the cutscene after the Colossus' first appearance won't work.  Hitting spacebar to skip the cutscene brings me to the briefing screen just fine, though.

Athlon XP 2700+
1 gig RAM (I want to say PC3200, but I'm not confident)
GeForce FX5600
XP Pro SP2

Any help?

Go to the recent builds forum, grab the latest build from the CVS builds thread and give that a try.

Re: New to FSO, numerous crash errors
Nope.  Updated to 3/23, and now, when I run it in D3D, I CTD after the initial loading screen for the campaign.  OpenGL lets me get to the mission, but with no ship models (irrelevant of jpg/tga textures).

Re: New to FSO, numerous crash errors
Delete the errorlog.txt and run the _d build. Post the first 6-7 lines of the new errorlog.txt file plus your FS.log file. Also report any errors you receive.

Re: New to FSO, numerous crash errors
I get held up at the inital/initial spelling error.  Poking around in the CVS Builds thread, it doesn't seem that's what's holding me up.  Anything I can do to fix that?

Re: New to FSO, numerous crash errors
The 3.6.8 Delta VPs will take care of that. Check out the Upgrade Project forums for more info.

Or just run without media VPs until you've figured out the cause of the problem.

Re: New to FSO, numerous crash errors
My experience :

I could never get Shivan's torrent verison to work on my machine properly without crashing.

I just ended up educating myself about Freespace SCP, and resetting up everything from scratch myself using the FAQ. I always load mediavps as a mod, and I always use the multimod system when using campaigns like Derelict to load both it and the mediavps.

Freespace SCP can and will work without any CTDs. But it can also take some time to set up correctly, try to be patient and go read the FAQ and these forums is my advice.

Be aware that the 3.6.8 Mediavps Delta do have some problems and require some additional files that are scattered around these forums to work correctly. (like species_defs.tbl for the thruster glows, as the main example)

Good Luck.

Re: New to FSO, numerous crash errors
No, people, I give the torrent to six of my friends, and all can start the game whiout any problem... just a CVS update... If you getting any crashes maybe, you are not running which the "Mediavps" as a mod, or your enable/disable a option in the setup of the launcher, you are not running the game well, you must always use the launcher, not direct from the .exe, you have not installed OpenAL, you have not seted the game to OpenGL 1024x768,  I cant secure that other resolutions works well...

If you have any sound problem, try to use first Direct sound, that is OpenAL, if you card supports EAX use EAX ONLY IF YOU CARD SUPPORT IT! and I not sure if that will work afer all...

I am.

or your enable/disable a option in the setup of the launcher

exe_filepath = C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_r-20060125.exe;
game_flags = -cell -spec -glow -jpgtga -mipmap -nomotiondebris -2d_poof -missile_lighting -img2dds -dualscanlines -targetinfo -orbradar -rearm_timer -ballistic_gauge -nobeampierce -ship_choice_3d -3dwarp -warp_flash -snd_preload -oldfire ;
active_mod = mediavpsbackup;

Where mediavpsbackup is what came with the torrent (using the normal mediavps folder for the upgrades).  Anything wrong?

I'm using the launcher.

I have, from the second torrent you posted.

OpenGL disappears my ships (except for cockpits) irrelevant of jpg/tga textures being loaded.  D3D8 is the only way I can see anything.

Nope.

Sounds like I'll have to take neoterran's path this weekend.

Poked around some more.  Disabling -img2dds got rid of the OpenGL errors, but I still have some random CTDs.

Re: New to FSO, numerous crash errors
img2dds is broken in the march CVS on some computers in OpenGL mode. I've confirmed this with taylor. It has been fixed in the April 12 build, but that build doesn't have voice synthesis support. I'd just disable it, it makes nice nebulas look bad anyway.

You will want to use OpenGL mode if you can, because not only is it faster, there are less bugs and it's the only version that is being actively developed at the moment. It also has nicer specular lighting.

I don't mean any disrespect to Shivan but the fact of the matter is that the torrent install doesn't work right for all people. I'm only posting my experience and my solution to make people aware that it is possible to run the SCP correctly so they don't give up.

If you want any additional help, like screenshots of my directory so you can compare it to yours, feel free to pm me.

I suggest finding the 3 CD Install and NOT using the HOTU version of freespace. Then upgrade it to version 1.20 using the official patch. Verify you can run and use this version without problems and then upgrade it to the SCP following karajormas FAQ,

http://www.3dactionplanet.com/hlp/hosted/fsurp/help/karajorma/intro.html

which can also help you find the movies if you're missing them. I've also succesfully gotten EVERY single mod campaign out there to work, although it does take some modified table files found all over this forum to make some of them work correctly.

Shivan, why do you have -cell shading option specified in the launcher on your torrent ? that doesn't make sense to me, and i'd definately take it out if I had it.

Just take a look, that is my SCP folders today... What is wrong here?
The mediavps/data/models-maps-tables, all of them are part of the Low End Shockwaves...
The movies are needed in freespace2/data for the movies can be played whiout mediavps.

    • Karajorma's Freespace FAQ
Re: New to FSO, numerous crash errors
First up let me say that you did a pretty good job with your first version. Having a torrent with everything in was something we should have done earlier and I'm not trying to knock what you did in any way. Most people who grabbed your torrent found it easier to deal with than any other method including following my FAQ so I'm actually happy to have it made somewhat redundant :)

That said I can see a few improvements that I'd make which would make things even easier for both of us by making it easier for anyone who downloads version 2.

1) When you next repackage try to make sure as much as you can is in VPs. For instance the Ursa should be in a clearly marked VP file (Preferably including instructions to delete upon Upgrade. I367_Ursa_Upgrade.vp or something like that (I picked a name that came before the media VPs in the alphabet). It's much easier to ask people to delete a single VP file when they upgrade to the official 3.6.8 VPs.
It might be nice if we could pursuade everyone to use similar notation for patches and optional upgrades for the same reason. Telling people in the 3.6.8 release thread to delete anything starting I367_ before installing the 3.6.8 media would be a huge timesaver for both you and me as well as the end user.
Having the low end shockwaves in a VP also allows the user to experiment with turning it off more easily.

2) Are those table files or .tbms in mediavps\Data\tables? Because it's pretty much the rule now that you should never include a table file in a media VP if you can possibly avoid it. The only table file the game should find should be the one belonging to the mod (if it involves a lot of changes) or the original retail tables.

3) I'm attaching a mod.ini file which you should add to the main FS2 folder along with a copy of that FS2.bmp file. Having a mod.ini in the main folder does no harm and can allow you to pass on information on how to renable the media VPs if they accidentally turn them off. Putting info in the mod.ini files is a good idea because they will be displayed to the user exactly when they need them.

4) Make sure you have the latest versions of the fs2open_pxo config file. MatthewPapa changed it recently and since it's gone down again he may have to change it a second time.

5) Include a copy of the  fs2open_pxo config file in the mediavps folder. The media VPs currently include a version that is now obsolete and this will override the one in Freespace2\Data even if it is correct.

6) If you can spare the space include the packaged VP of Lightspeeds nebulae in the mediaVP folder. I don't think we have modular stars.tbm files though but seeing as how the table includes everything from FS2 Retail this hopefully won't be a problem.
So many people are getting into trouble getting hold of the wrong files for these that it would be nice to solve the problem for anyone new.

7) Ensure that you don't have -cell set in the default setting. You don't need this seeing as how you're not including mv_cell anyway.

That's about all I can see for now. If I think of anything else I'll pass it on.

Like I said, the backup is the 3.6.7 vp files while I use the standard mediavps folder to hold 3.6.8 Delta.  Whether or not I crash randomly seems to be  irrelevant of the name of the 3.6.7 folder.

There's a short guide on how to build VPs in my FAQs modding section. It's pretty simple really, barely harder than winzip.

the mod.ini and fs2.bmp in the retail folder is already there...

Opps. Missed them :) Check mine though. Adding information on how to run the port for instance is a good idea.

I'm not a table expert but as far as I can see the shockwave uses the same filenames as the one in mv_adveffects. That means that the shockwave tables modules in that VP would also work with the low end ones. (By default there are no fighter shockwaves in the mv_adveffects ones too which is much more canon).

Lightspeed released a package of nebulae that campaigns like Derelict SCP amongst others are using. It makes sense to include this with the media VPs as it makes it easier for new people to install those campaigns. I'm looking for a link to the VP containing the new version with the correct stars table but if I can't find one I can simply send you mine.
