The d20 license is doable, you just have to follow the rules. Most licensing is like that. If you act like a real business, you get treated like one

No money changes hands, but you have to do certain things if you want to use the d20 logo, if we had done OGL we wouldn't have had to do those things, but we also could not then claim "d20" which, whether the d20-haters like it or not, has a certain marketing advantage.
And giving away a PDF for free seems contrary to the whole "gee, we'd like to be able to pay the rent" goal of this. It's only 15 bucks and they take paypal
