Well, okay, less of a tank and more of a moving fortress. Sorry for the crappy picture quality.

Size isn't set yet. 300 meters may be just a *tad* too large for a ground vehicle, but at least I can justify the number of turrets and mechs it carries

100% made in Blender. 8990 polys in all, but that's just because it's turrets are a bit too high-poly. No textures yet.

The two large twin turrets are it's main guns, and can smack down smaller capships at translunar ranges. The smaller single turrets are more it's main ground weaponry, along with the massive quad missile launchers. The small gray dots are interceptor guns, very effective against enemy missiles and small craft. There's two quad rapid-fire beam turrets on the front and back to cover the mechs and aerofighters exiting the fortress.

This is all very high-tech, even though it may not seem so. The missiles are easily intercontinental, with top speeds of over 20 mach. The regular turrets are all beams, with effective targeting ranges of hundreds of kilometers (at that distance the targeting becomes so imprecise it's just hit-and-miss).

The thing can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h (hey, it's damn massive   ).

It can carry a few dozen (amount subject to change) Hermes-mechs (the main ground battle craft, no model yet) and about that many Drifer-hovercraft (stealthy, fast, can move underwater, recon craft, no model yet). It can also carry a couple hundred Regian soldiers (really really tough).

Mechs exit through the deployment holes under the front bit, and the Drifters exit from the bay in the back, visible in the back perspective pic.

Hehe. Detailed. First create universe with detailed craft info, then create models

I always loved the Mammoth tank..being able to put the firepower of a fortress into one vehicle is a cool thing. Problem is, unless your world is going to be completely flat , it's not going anywhere o_o

That's one of the biggest reasons why I wanted to size it down a big.

No, this ******  can't move through mountaneous terrain, but it has a limited anti-grav system enabling it to evade some of the smaller hills   (hey, the anti-grav systems on the massive dropper ships can hold dozens of these fortresses down)

It's more a base of operations anyway, and the weapons ranges really allow it to just sit there and pound the enemy with missiles

Besides, even if it comes to a mountain, it can just aim one of the large beams at it and presto, you've got yourself a rather large pile of rubble

It's still a mountain though

Sweet design dude.  Is this for any campaign that's coming out?

  • What is this? I don't even...
Yeah, its just in a bunch of pieces now

Silly...  just plain silly...  (have you been freebasing Heavy Gear again?)

It's a shame that the FS engine can't model atmoshperic flight correctly.

So how are you going to use this thing?  will it be immobile in game or have you figured out some way to limit a unit's movement to only two dimensions (and aren't telling us about it   )
I told you that It would be done by November, well, mostly anyway...

I'm working on something new... shhhhh, it's a seceret.

mmh, could be possible if you give only the "ship" a turn speed aound the Y axis?
SCREW CANON!

But unless your "terrain" were perfectly flat it would suffer a collision with every little bump on the surface.

Not to mention that getting hit with a big gun tends to knock the model around, screwing up your model's alignment with the ground.

(need @#$%!!! sourcecode!!!... mumble, grumph, mumble)

It will be done by November, trust me :D

PATHS!!!  You could build a lot of paths into your ground model for the thing to use!  Of course it won't react dynamically to external stimuli without a butt ton (metric, not imperial) of SEXP support but it just might work.

And Shrike's got it in one

Enyone wonder why this isn't in the Freespace Modding forum? That's because it really doesn't have much to do with Freespace, I figured the 8990 poly count would give some hints

If I had the skills, I'd make this a high-poly thing in Lighwave. But currently that's all I have.

[bangs head against keyboard repeatedly]

CRAP!  I knew that one too...

8900 polies wouldn't prevent it's use in FS, esp since most of them seem to be taken up in subobjects (turrets).

How original can you make a supertank?

And no, it doesn't have great big balls of plasma that can irradiate an area for the next few millenia.

Come on! I spent the better part of an entire afternoon on this *******

Not to mention about a few months on the background for the Regians.

Personally, I always thought the Ogres from STG were the most well-thought-out Giant Frigging Tank. They're big, but not so big they can't move around, and most are articulated in the middle to allow better rough-terrain handling ability. Realistically, you have to figure that anything too big to be able to move down a four-lane highway isn't mobile enough to be worth the effort of making it mobile at all. This is the size range that Bolo's fit into as well, as I recall. 20-30m wide and 50-60m long is probably about the optimum practical size. Any bigger and you start severely sacrificing ability to actually GO anywhere.
Something like this is actually MUCH more suited for being an airborne design. If you can make it A-grav capable, just make that your primary mode of operation. That way it can go anywhere it darn well wants to, mountains or not.
If it aint broke, break it!

The anti-grav systems aren't advanced enough. They can't stick one powerful enough on something this size. Well, not ones powerful enough to operate for a sustained period of time. It just uses anti-grav "jumps" to get over the worst obstacles.

Or okay, if the Regians built a new fortress design, they could make a floating one. But these things are over a century old, relics from the last great war.

"A relic from the great war 100 years ago, these juggernauts can act as command tanks or resupply platforms for smaller ground craft and armies. Can also be used to safely transport hundreds of troops to a field of engagement. These lumbering war machines are not favoured in the current state of peace, as their appearance is vulgar at best."

That's what I've got marked down for it

So these aren't made anymore. It's like a beast constructed by a warring era, despised in the age of peace.
