Frequent Crashes & Freezes and then some
Hi all! First, I am sure some of the problems I have are already mentioned somewhere else, probably with a solution, too. If that is the case, please forgive my ignorance (with the search function broken) and kindly point me to the right thread if you have the time. Thanks! :)

Here's my relevent spec:

AthlonXP 2500+ (barton)
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe (nForce 2 chipset) w/ most recent chipset driver (6.70 specifically)
512MB Kingston DDRAM*1
ATI Radeon 9550 (250/200 OCed to 430/211 in 3D) w/ Omega modded Catalyst 6.3
Windows 2000 Pro SP4 w/ all windows updates

1. Whenever I use OpenGL in fullscreen, my computer automatically reboots itself upon execution. Specifically, the monitor goes dark, trying to switch resolution/color depth a few times, then boom, restart. I have tried just about every build after 3.6.7 (inclusive) and the problem persists throughout. I have also tried using both the OGL driver from Omega 6.3 and from the official 6.4. Both exhibit the same problem. Interestingly enough, if I run it in window it's totally fine. This leads me to believe that something has gone amiss when the program tries to switch the resolution. BTW, my desktop resolution and color depth settings are already the same as my FS2O settings (1024X768X32), so there goes the obvious way of a fix. Also, this doesn't happen when running in D3D8 (but then I would miss the shine map... :().

2. This is the more annoying of the two. Every recent CVS build I tried (ie: 20060323, 20060421, 20060425) freezes very often in the stock FS2 campaign. It's not stop-then-resume type of freeze. When it occurs, I have about 1 minute to use task manager to terminate FS2O. If I fail to do that, the monitor goes totally black afterwards and I can do nothing but use the reboot botton. There are no particular signs for the freeze. As far as I can tell, it can happen in any situation. Sometimes it happens less than 5 minutes into a game, sometimes it doesn't happen for more than 20 minutes, no matter which mission I am playing.  This occurs in both OGL and D3D modes. However, it doesn't happen with 3.6.7.

Here's my fs2.log:

I am sorry to put it on rapidshare, but I have some troubles finding the attachment botton.  :nervous:

3. Just an inquiry. Is FS2NET down? I can't get to the registration page, nor can I connect to the server in-game even with the correct config file.

Anyway, any help is appreciated! Thanks a bunch in advance.

Yep. FS2NetD is down unfortunately.

Ah, hopefully it's only temporary.

Any insight for my other problems? Actually I noticed the search function works now. I should probably try that first in the mean time. :D

#1 is an issue with the 6.3+ ATI drivers.  You can downgrade to 6.2 and it should stop crashing in OpenGL, or I think you can just disable movies and it will stop crashing.  If you stick with 6.3+ though just be sure to either not run a debug build fullscreen, or run it with the -no_warn option to prevent it from giving you all of the warning popup messages.

If you're using the decals, don't use them. They're very buggy and they were the cause of numerous freeze ups for me. Plus, besides the laser holes, which are nice looking, they look like crap.

Being a cheap bastard who doesn't want to lose the performence gain in Omega 6.3, I merely swapped the opengl driver to the 6.2 one. Well, it still crashes and reboots. I will try a complete driver switch and see if that fixes it.

EDIT: Yup, a complete driver switch fixed it. I can also confirm that this has nothing to do with the ATI opengl driver, but rather something else (most likely more generic). In fact, I am running catalyst 6.2 with the OGL driver from omega 6.3 without any crash. Awesome! Thanks a bunch, taylor! :p

Well, I don't play with decals on. I've actually tried with all features off before, and it still froze anyway. Thanks for the help, though. :)
