Why don't we make the parent forum for all things FRED, while this forum is for posting about campaigns, and FRED Academy stays FRED Academy?

I've always thought that the parent forum should be called "Freespace Missions" rather than Freespace Campaigns. "Campaigns" is too restrictive.

My own suggestion in a nutshell:
FreeSpace Campaigns = General discussion about missions, campaigns and FREDing. Rename to FreeSpace Missions or Missions/Campaigns or whatever if more appropriate.
Campaigns List = Mission and campaign release announcements while the website hosts the actual list of released campaigns (missions too?)

Are we switching to posting new threads for each campaign?  That'd strike me as being a tidier way to do it vis-a-vis handling updates, as rather than skip through the main big thread-o-doom you can just check which are being bumped to the top by posts from the original creator.

I would suggest renaming this one to Campaign Releases or something like that. Just have the campaign release threads and the campaign list in here. Keep it so that only releases are posted in here with their support and feedback thread. It would make it very easy for new people to see exactly what is available to play when they first come into the community if they could simply click on this forum and see a list of released campaigns.

Then rename the main forum to Freespace Campaigns And FREDding. Too many people post FRED questions in modding because they don't realise that we treat modding and FREDding seperately. Ironically that's the last forum I look in so it probably takes longer to get an answer from me if you post there than anywhere else on the board

I second the motion for using 'missions' over 'campaigns', afterall single missions do pop up from time to time. So something like 'Missions and FRED' would be great.

Hello i'm new here but i have freespace2 eversince it was released in 1999 i have a few q's.

can some one tell me which recent campain can run good without the freespace2 open?

and without any elaborate mods...

freespace2 open is reallllllllllllllllllllllly hard to to install cause i don't know how to install these mods it's sooo freeaking complicated....

actually i think this forum is just a way to make life a little easier for skippy as far as keeping the campaigns list updated goes.

Had to go back to my original version of the FAQ to answer this one but.

INSTALLING AN FS2 MISSION, MOD OR CAMPAIGN

What you should do to install an add on depends on the kind of add-on you are adding. Any campaigns or missions which only contain .fs2 and .fc2 can be installed simply by plonking those files down in the Freespace\Data\Missions directory.
Most mods however contain new ships and weapons. This in itself is not a problem but if you later install another mod also containing new ships and weapons it will normally overwrite bits of the other one. Even if it doesn't the presence of the other mod can often cause problems as it might have removed a ship the new one needs.
Before you install any mods for FS2 I suggest backing up your Freespace2/Data drawer. Just make a copy and rename it to "Data - Unmodified" or something similar. Now install the mod following the instructions in the .readme. When you want to return to the unmodified version of FS2 you simply have to rename both directories. You may also wish to move your pilot files to the newly renamed data drawer so that you don't lose any promotions/medals you have gained while playing the mod. If you are using the FS2_open you also have the option of using the -mod command line flag to pick the mod you want, you will however still have to move the pilot file manually if you want to keep the same pilot for multiple campaigns.
If the mod is just a .vp file then you can turn it on or off simply by renaming the extension. FS2 looks for files with the extension .vp but will ignore .vpDisabled Another option is to move the .vp to another directory (NOT data though!)
Using this method I have installed several different Mods on my computer without any trouble.
If you have FS2_open this method begins to really pay off. Thanks to the -mod switch you can choose the campaign you want to play simply by picking them from the launcher program.

To be honest I think you're better off just getting hold of FS2_Open. If you use ShivanSPS's pack installing becomes much easier. There are also full instructions on how to install in my FAQ.
