"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

 Nice!
To consider the Earth as the only populated world in infinite space is as absurd as to assert that in an entire field of millet, only one grain will grow. - Metrodorus of Chios
I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. I could only imagine the GTVA warriors giving a mighty KIAAIIIIIII shout as they worked their triggers, their biceps bulging with sinew after years of Ivan Drago-esque steroid therapy and weight training. - General Battuta

:wtf:

I think two things need to be clarified here:

One, the ads help pay for the server hosting costs. And Two, those costs come out of my cradit card. Soooo.... draw yer own conclusions as to why I don't have ads blocked. ;)

And really, the whole ad blocking craze was well and good when sites went stir-crazy and had pop-ups, pop-unders, and all those other annoying formats. Generally speaking, these days most sites learned better and have much more well-behaved ads, which there's not much reason to block and every reason to leave unblocked - especially if you like that site.

It may come to that. We're unsatisfied with the current ad system and will be getting rid of it as soon as we find an alternate system to use. If we can't find something....

The wierd thing is that I once actually tried to turn off ad-blocking on Firefox and I couldn't find a way to do it.

30 British Pound Sterling per month?  Per admin?  I'm sure I can donate a few dollars a month to help out if you guys need that :)

Re: Nice to know someone cares...
What do you mean, per admin? Our hosting package costs 30 GBP a month. On top of that, there's the negligible $10 per year cost for the domain. But none of the admins get paid except for myself, and I only get "paid" because that 30 GBP comes out of my credit card account. I don't even know if what the server was costing me and what I was receiving from Google evened out, since I only ever got 2 checks from them before the account was canceled.

Re: Nice to know someone cares...
I'm lost.  I know it costs money to run a webpage like HLP.  So all admins split the cost, is what I meant by "Per admin"?  I know all admins work for free for HLP (well, most likely) and it's your passion for FreeSpace that make you guys created HLP and keep it running for years :)

Re: Nice to know someone cares...
No, the admins don't split the cost. Advertising has approximately covered for the costs until Google kicked us out, so nobody has had need to donate. Yet. Anyway, the server costs HLP 30GBP per month, period.

I love how around 90% of the posts in this thread have nothing to do with the topic the thread was started about.
I wonder if the Shivans eat chocolate? Or play FS2, for that matter.
