Re: Top 25 worst tech products
Ah yes, the Zip Click of Death.

I'd have to say that none of that list is in the least unexpected.

Re: Top 25 worst tech products
Weren't zip drives prone to burning up quite easily?

I know mine did, and my neighbors did.  Mine being internal, his being external.

Pertaining to the article, it's nice to see PCWorld actually making a list that was, probably, bribe free.

I had a Jaz drive once. It died quite rapidly.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Zip drive was the computing equivalent of the MiniDisc, I guess.

* vyper still has a zip drive in his tower - tis just not connected to anything. :(

Edit: MiniDisc had potential. Such a shame it was never adopted properly.

It was almost immediately superceded by MP3, though; IIRC the 2 use identical compression strategies and everything, so once you could get affordable flash memory there wasn't much point in it.  My hifi actually has an MD slot, which cost good money (on top of the price you'd expect).

Re: Top 25 worst tech products
I had a 20 Gig Iomega Zip drive. Thing was too slow to be any real use except during a reformat, but it was, actually, pretty reliable. Totally useless these days, mind.

No-one's come out with any truly stupid tech innovations since Clive Sinclair retired though. I mean, the C5, Heat Sensitive printer-rolls, launching a tape-streamer 2 weeks after Amstrad launch the 6128 with built-in disc drive? For a man who shaped the computing world, he sure had to fire a lot of blanks...

They just don't make 'em like him any more :(

Sir Clive took a very scattershot approach to research. He just made what he thought was cool without regards as to whether anyone else thought so. The result was that he came up with some dross that no one else would want as well as inventing the pocket calculator and home computer.

Well, at least he can take heart that all those years after the C5, someone can invent something even worse - the Segway.

See, what I've never understood with the Segway is, if it costs the same as a really good, useful, fuel efficent car, why not just go for the car?

It's for fat americans too lazy to walk.  Which, I guess, is a growth market.

It was crippled, I presume, by the fact you had to actually stand up to use it.

That said, I forsee the technology behind the segway having some practical use in the future - perhaps in robotics.
