Westboro is extremely anti-gay, and believes that acceptance of gay culture in America will result in God's wrath being poured out on the country (they specifically use 9/11, the Columbia, and Katrina as examples of this), and that God is also killing soldiers for the same reasons.

They explain it pretty well at any one of their websites.
