Re: Sick? Quick, you have to--
I dont like anti sniffle drugs, they tend to hide remove the symptoms not the cause in my experience, i heal quicker through excercise rather than bedrest..

It's my understanding that that's exactly what those 'cold-and-flu' drugs aim to do - alleviate symptoms. My pharmacist friend tells me that they haven't found any significant method for fighting viral infections - the body is the only thing that seems capable of mounting a reasonable defence. Good thing too I suppose.

Homeopaths and natural alternatives, I have a great deal of (mostly unfounded) skepticism about those. My mum did have a go at a few of those methods after being diagnosed with her lung cancer, but eventually she just gave up and entered into the brutal radio/chemotherapy routine. Tough to say whether it went better or not.

Well, I certainly hope she is feeling better now, Chemo is a horrible thing to have to endure, both for the patient and for their family :(

Re: Sick? Quick, you have to--
Indeed, serious diseases are an area of contention I can understand, but certainly in the realm of muscle problems and other minor ailments, I'd rather recieve Homeopathic treatment than take anti-inflammatories or the like (not that I can, the stuff makes me violently ill anyway).

Yeah, I can see your point, although I suspect Proper Physiotherapy also tends to cover a lot of those areas well, too.

Anecdote; My dad has pretty bad arthritis in his fingers.  He spent a while getting Chinese accupuncture, drinking tea made of what appeared to be the contents of a lawnmower bucket, etc.  And he thought it was working, but it was far too expensive.  Now, I don't know if it was a placebo effect or what.  But what I would like, though, is to not pay for these things as is in the NHS, but to take them, study them, find out if they are working and why, and use that to make them affordable treatments (and that doesn't entail making a pill or anything).

To be fair, my opinion on homeopathy in the sense of a minor cure (I wouldn't support its funding where there are known effective, tested, and proven treatments) or as a placebo for something uncurable is a hell of a lot mellower than it was, say, a year ago.  The only thing is that homeopathy, thanks to the Bloody Tabloid Media, has now become the cure for everything ever, which is obviously complete bollocks.

Plus, my knee-jerk reaction to anything Prince Charles ever says is '**** off, you plant-talking, in-bred, jug-eared leech'.

This is interesting, though; http://www.badscience.net/?cat=35.  Just started reading that webpage/blog proper.

WOW,  :eek2: Steak and chips......."bows" We're not worthy!!!!!!!!"
I'm no advocate od Homeopathy for actually curing ailments of any description, If the patient gets a bit of peace of mind, and thats what they want, Then i support it in that respect..
In any case i'm stuck with the NHS so............. :shaking:

Ignore it, mostly. If it involves serious pain probably take some Tylenol or ibuprofen. Stuffy nose I just grin (not literally and bear, constricted throat means drinking hot (very hot) water; just water, nothing in it, it's the heat that's effective. If I feel like absolute crap, spend most of the day in bed reading. The only over-the-counter medication that works for me anymore is Nyquil, and most of the time I don't bother with it unless things are just horrible.

I've only taken serious painkillers once; not doing it again. You're loopy, and you know you're loopy, but you can't do anything about it. It's very annoying.

LMAO, I had a bit of a "mishap" a few years back and i had a morphine autoinjector rammed into my inside thigh, Hurt like hell, after say 12 seconds, I was as high as the preverbial kite, I didnt come down for wwhat felt like two days. Its like youve been forcefed a dozen prozac and your daydreaming on a "rollercoaster" while your bodys numb and your conscouseness is "intermittent" to say the least.

Wholeheartedly reccomended for newcomers to pain relief.

Re: Sick? Quick, you have to--
Most homeopaths who arent greedy and/or ignorant will tell you that they're for strengthening your immune system in the long term, not short term, let alone immediate.  "Alternative medications" (I call them nutrition supplements) are wonderful things, as they prevent serious ailments resulting from viral infections, and help to fight off bacterial infections faster.  With proper long term treatment, they can sometimes prevent cancer from spreading as fast.  They also help a person extend life within a considerable margin.  But they wont do jack **** when something has already hit.

Also, I've found that pain killers, cold and cough meds, etc dont do anything anyway, just make you care less about it.  I have never felt relief from any of those drugs.

Re: Sick? Quick, you have to--
Most of the time I just ignore any ailments. Even the 'severe' ones turn out to be transient when I do see a doctor.

Case in point: I had this small swelling in my lower abdominal region for a while (about 4 months, I think). It's particularly uncomfortable when I'm cycling or doing any strenuous exercise other than walking. I did a little research and concluded that it could possibly be a hernia, so I went to have it checked out.
The doctor poked and prodded at it for a while, decided it was a hernia (not strangulated, so not immediately life-threatening or painful) then sent me down to the hospital. Another doctor poked at it for a while, couldn't find anything amiss, and sent me home.
By this time, the swelling had gone. 4 months I've had it, and it just vanishes.
A week later, it's back. All the prodding must've fixed it temporarily. I figure it is a hernia, but until it starts to hurt it's not important. Besides, with all my other aches and pains (caused by a combination of a hunched back and an all-or-nothing approach to exercise) it's not particularly important right now.

The only time I take pills is during the summer. Antihistamines to stave off hayfever. Ignoring it only works up to a point.

Re: Sick? Quick, you have to--
I'm certainly not one for 'I am going to focus my mystic energy into the problem area' type Homeopathic treatment, that's one step away from Astrology as far as I'm concerned, but acupuncture seems to be a pretty effective treatment for muscle problems, and massage, whilst being relaxing is also good (But be very careful of homepaths who think massage can solve problems like growths, they stand a vast chance of making matters worse be actually spreading it with the massage). Basically, physical medicine I can accept, spiritual medicine is a pile of crap.

It's okay, it's been a while. Actually, in a couple of months, it'll have been two years already - God.

Anyway, in trademark style, this thread has gone far off its rails in just a few hours. Maybe it'll come back around eventually.

Re: Sick? Quick, you have to--
True, but wounds like that never really heal, I feel kinda insensitive even if it was an accident.

I suppose it's best to let your own body heal whenever possible, since it increases resistance the next time round, a lot of weak immune systems are being traced back to taking too much medicine rather than allow the body to develop appropriate white blood cells.

Re: Sick? Quick, you have to--
Well, back to the topic shall we.

I usually try to ignore it at first. If one thinks too much about the symptoms then you really get sick. If you think that you will not get sick then you are on a right way. Mental drug is one of the best.

But of course, garlic, medicine, vitamines that sort of stuff helps to boost up the mind :p
Habeeb it...

Do you guys not think that mental state during flu or whatever is reflective of a deficiancy in a certain element, eg as said earlier garlic and Vitamins raise your mood a bit as the bodies biochemistry reasserts itslef?
