We have Nazis in the UK too, we had an active Nazi Party in the UK even during WW2, and we never rally declared a cessation of warfare against them. Not that you'd ever get away with it, but strictly speaking, the UK still has a shoot-on-sight policy dating back from WW2 with regard to Nazis.

LOL You always find the worst problems are those that point their fingers at other people.

I know there were problems with the Japanese surrender to America simply because a number of Japanese soldiers had no idea of the concept 'surrender', which was a massive dis-honour, and carried on fighting regardless. Many were hunted down by their own army.

There's a few situations like that in the World, it's still a hangable offence to drive pigs across London Bridge, something I once got a lecture for for pointing out to a Police Officer

Tell you what I'll make an effort to say something vaguely on-topic for a change. Strikes me that people in the US are becoming a bit more extreme in their nationalistic and, more to the point, xenophobic views. Although admittedly I base that on nothing but media coverage which you can never trust 100%. They just spin things whichever way sells papers or increases viewing figures. But, if it is true though then it's a worry. Could be that the US is going this way because of the extreme views of others but if the US responds in kind then it's going to turn into a feedback loop and everything is going to go to hell.

The problem is a social one, I think, in the UK, it's pretty easy to think of other cities as something more than simply 'Them', I'd still consider someone from Birmingham or Glasgow as one of 'Us', despite the fact I'm closer to France than Scotland, there's a big piece of water between us. In the States it's much harder, there are lakes the size of small countries between cities, or entire mountain ranges. Someone from Texas would find it hard to consider their lifestyle had anything to do with someone in New York, also, the way the Government works there, with Federal and State levels, is a brilliant idea for encouraging diversity, but can also help to cause insular communities, in my opinion.

Mosley's (fascist) National Front or somesuch, I think.  Nowadays the BNP seem to be the politically 'acceptable' (acceptable to idiots and probably Daily Mail readers) face of racism.

I think, in general, the Scottish tendency is to think of England as 'them'.  In fact, most Glasweigans probably think of Edinburgh as 'them' too, it's (insularity) probably a symptom of being a small quasi-nation with a national identity that's sort of under constant threat by politics.  And it's probably not something that fully 'extends' in any case to a serious level; I'd think most people in Scotland felt the 7/7 bombings - for example - as keenly as people in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.

I'd agree with IP, though; US nationalism has seemed to take a very 'extreme' turn; I think when dissent is called 'Anti-Americanism', then it's a bad sign.  I guess, the problem is that 9/11, combined with political changes, made a set of circumstances where the government manufactured the concept of being under constant attack ala the Cold War, and where the defense for the ordinary person became fairly vocal and blind exclamations of their patriotism.
