*shrugs* The whole aliens abducting humans and then messing with their bodies just reeks of Q4. The gravity tricks were nifty the first few times, but then they started to overuse it and put these tricks everywhere. As for guns, the guns had as much feeling in them than a super soaker. I guess that all these years of abysmal FPS games have taken their toll on you, even a hint of relatively unique feature makes you happy. No matter how overused or repetitive that feature or features are.

true, but think of it this way, at least there's no gravity gun  :p

do not torment the sleep deprived artist, he may be vicious when cornered,
in case of emergency, administer caffeine to the artist,
he will become docile after that,
and less likely to stab you in the eye with a mechanical pencil

I guess that makes Quake 4 a rip off of all those old black and white alien abduction films then.

I like the way you portray your opinion as if it's fact and everyone else in this topic is just wrong. Perhaps you should consider the possibility that it's not just the new gameplay innovations that's intruiging about this game. It also features what seems to be a well done story, potentially interesting characters (and, thank the gods, a player character who is actually a character!) and a sizable portion of stylistic flair, which is more than I can say for Q4.

I'm interested.

Which is more then can ever be said for any of the Quake or Doom series, so ha. (I couldn't be bothered to play beyond the first level of Quake 4. It bored me. I finished Doom 3 because I had nothing better to do.) The portals and variable gravity are gimmicks, perhaps, but they're neat gimmicks, and I like them. Having a player character who is, as Ransom says, an actual character, is like a breath of fresh air. I don't believe I've ever played a whole shooter before that had as many lines from the PC in it as that demo did. Prey plays the horror card much better then Doom 3 did; you aren't attacked from behind once, the bloodspatter is really more incidental then anything else. And while the Strogg might be disgusting, they never really succeeded in evoking the "you sick bastards" that Prey's enemies have. (It came around the time I got my first good look at the zombies...and realized that's some kind of parasitic bug on the front.)

And this is the first shooter that's actually succeeded in evoking an emotional response from me, period. I'm going to get the full game, if for no other reason then because I want a crack at that thing that killed the kids. But there's plenty of other reason, most of which has already be cited.

So bah on you Fury. You're full of it. :p

Got to say I'm with Fury here. There's nothing, at least for me, that makes the demo stand out from the big grey mass of first person shooters.

Not bad, not bad at all.

To be sure, it's bloody refreshing to not only hear your player talking realistically given the situation, but to say things that we would say in the given situation. For instance, when he comes across the kids locked inside that cell, he mutters; "Aww, this can't be good", which is so what I would say.

Personally, I really like what they've done with the alien environment. I like how it's not the cliched mothership or military-style base, but rather what looks like their home planet, 'sun' and all, which justifies the presence of those wierd lizard creatures quite well; it's an ecosystem. Not to mention the very cool gravity puzzles and seamless portal thing they've got going, of which the latter I can't recall seeing done as well as this in any other game. Funky.

I'll definintely be picking this up for my brand-spanking-new '360.

Go to the Prey Demo\base\ folder, add a ".zip" to the end of the demo00.pk4 file, and open 'er up in WinRAR. That demo had some good tracks. :)

BTW, did anyone else think that the general feel of the game, artistically, was very appropriate for a Star Wars NJO / Yuuzhan Vong setting?

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
