I found it really inbalanced, and once the Empire invaded me  I just lost faith.

I bribed the Empire to get a better stading with the Emperor, and was on my way to the upper echelons of nobility....than all of a sudden I was a hounded scoundrel bombed into oblivion!

....thing is, the manual fails to mention that while the magistrate is pleased with your "contribution" after a while it infuriates the Emperor himself.
