i think my psu is about to die
lately i noticed my power supply has been making the most annoying squeeling sound you could imagine. i first thought it was the berings in the fan, because it sounds like the berings are loose. but today after work my computer sorta crashed and the lights were blinkingviolently and it was screeching. it could be tha caps fisseling themselves out. nothing like something to fail to give me an excuse to upgrade my rig. i think il get a sound card and maybe another gig or ram as well. anyway its a 420w, and i think i might be pushing it a little too hard. so il go up to between 5 and 6 hundred watts. i want something tith really cool blue lights (to match the old one), a 24 pin connector would be a plus, my mobo will take either a 20 or 24 pin. i also need one of them 4 pin 12 volt connectors which every psu made in the last few years has had. i have roughly 80 bucks to spend. anyone reccomend anything?

for change out of 80 bucks..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103929  same model as mine, does the job admirably..

but i'd scrounge up extra dough for at least a 500 watt or above PSU.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103931  like thus.

both are pretty damn reliable, i've got no complaints from the trupower series.

and those 4 pin 12 volt connectors, they for fans or something, if so, they tend to come with molex connectors so you can hook them straight up to the same power connectors your HD's take.

Re: i think my psu is about to die
il take a look. btw my case is rather small and i have very little space. so the psu can be a max of 5 inches long, by 6 inches wide by 3 and a half tall.

Re: i think my psu is about to die
so, what -is- your case?.. these things are built to fit in most ATX form factor cases.

Re: i think my psu is about to die
Pretty much anything from FSP, Enermax, Enhance, Seasonic or their rebadges will be work well (or PCP&C and Zippy, if you need the absolute best and have a ton of cash to burn). It's slightly preferable to get something with either a single 12V rail or at least three of them, but by no means essential.

This one has mediocre efficiency and looks generic but otherwise has outstanding electrical characteristics for the price: (single 36A 12V line and FSP manufacture)

Since you said you wanted lights and stuff, there is also this one:

There are better performing ones for the money, but it's still quite reliable and has a high efficiency. It powered my SLI rig for six months with solid voltages and still runs my backup system fine.

These are excellent overall performers too:

The second one is slightly weaker but also a bit quieter.

Not sure about the size issue though. I know the Modstreams are a bit larger than average, but don't know about the others.

Re: i think my psu is about to die
one of theese -> http://www.apevia.com/product.php?pid=176
im looking at this psu http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817152025
, like the flames and the fact you can unplug cables if you dont need them. i just need to see if it fits. anyone else use this brand? *edit* nevermind, that one wont fit. width and height seem to be pretty consistant. its the length my computer cant handle. my current psu is just under 5 inches long, and i got roughly a quarter inch clearance between it and the connectors on my cd drive. it cant be wider than 6 inches cause its already touching my system fan. and its a few mm abouve my video card.

Re: i think my psu is about to die
its one of those cube cases. and i tell you this is the last time i buy one of those :D
i wnet and bought this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817182030
its dual fan  has lights and it might actually fit. i may have to slightly modify the dvd burner's position for it to work though. i used this as an excuse to order me that xfi extreme music card. they should be here in a couple days.
