Ship(s) for a New Species
This is the NF Sphinx, a fighter made by the Nkaya, a new species that will play a medium-sized role in my first (well, not really) campaign, which I hope to make at least halfway decent. I need to convert it to a pof file, and I need some texturing done as well. I do, however, have some quite good UV mapping done. The editor I used is Wings3D. I like it, but I couldn't convert to a .pof with it and as many other programs are necessary for the life of me. If you like these pictures and would be interested in doing the conversion, please either PM me or post in this thread and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Give me suggestions for other ships in the Nkaya fleet,

Info on Nkaya ships, so that if you feel like modifying it (if I give it to you, which I probably will, just ask nicely and state your purpose) you can:

Their ships have organic-looking curves, like the Sobek, Aten, Cairo, Bakha, Ptah, etc. Their fighters are built like mobile gun-platforms, not high-speed ships. However, they are streamlined so that they can do the best with what they have. I haven't come up with anything for Nkaya capital ships, but they will probably be similar to the warships I listed above. Colors: green, greenish yellow, some light blue, gray, brown, and rarely orange.

Your opinions? And no, it's supposed to be like an abdomen of a bug, not that! Pervert. I only just noticed that now.

Re: Ship(s) for a New Species
It's just that organic ships are not doing it for me anymore... Seems like every other race takes their design philosophies from the fauna of their planet. How close were we of making the space shuttle look like moose?

Where are the Cybernetic/Robotic ships that are not green/grey/red? Rotating sections and lego blocks are always cool. Or if one must go for organic, the make it truly organic! Make a Zerg fleet! What about flying saucers, huh? Some race must have done those too.

Sorry Aardwolf, for ranting in your topic. It wasn't really aimed at you. You just broke the dam.
The model is good. Makes me think about the flating gas-head dudes from MoO3.

Re: Ship(s) for a New Species
This looks like a Shivanized version of a ship from FreeLancer......
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Oh right. That heavy fighter the tommys liked to fly. Yes, it does look a lot like it, now that you mentioned it.

Re: Ship(s) for a New Species
I want to see designs like the Orion or Herc, y'know, blocky and utalitarian designs that are most certainly not aerodynamic in any in way. Why people always make spaceships sleek and aerodynamic regardless of in-atmo capability i'll never know... Organic is one thing, but is a Koala aerodynamic? I think not!

Case. Closed.

But still, good-looking start, let's see some more detail.

Re: Ship(s) for a New Species
Hmm... I'm running low on modelling ideas. This is about the best I can do for a while. I'll keep trying for new ships and stuff. I've given the "rant" some thought, and it seems like some of your points are valid. I still think it's a cool looking ship, though, and I'd like to be able to incorporate it somehow. I have a high-poly version that isn't UV-mapped, but it's basically just the same thing after the Smooth tool, and it's too big for WinCOB2POF or PCS to convert. And when I say "organic" I don't mean "it looks like an animal," I mean "it has smooth flowing curves."

Re: Ship(s) for a New Species
New Corvette... I also have one for before I applied "Smooth" to it, but I think this one looks cooler. Perhaps what I will do is have the smaller ships be smoother and more organically-curved, while the larger ships will be boxier. Then, depending on which looks better, I may apply one round of Smooth on top of the model. Looks kind of like a cross between the Sobek and the Raynor... before Smoothing it looked more like a Sobek-Deimos-Raynor hybrid. No turrets yet--I don't know how to do that. I don't even know how to make it into a working .pof file, despite the help I got from Axem the other day.

I'm trying to do what I think was meant by the "rant" posted by Prophet, but too few polygons just looks too boxy or angular.

The engines were the easy part: All I did was use Inset on the back two faces of the engine mounts, and then Extrude with a negative distance. The roundness came when I Smoothed it afterward.

Re: Ship(s) for a New Species
More info on the Nkaya:

After proving themselves as a stable, intelligent, friendly, and more importantly loyal (to the GTVA) species, the Nkaya were allowed to do their own construction at a Vasudan shipyard... somewhere. I haven't decided where yet. To do this, they opened up their homeworld to traders, and auctioned off some of their valuable natural and "human" (Nkaya personnel) resources. The Nkaya are willing to work for free, as long as their leadership finds their work to be benificial to the Nkaya species. Because the construction is done at a Vasudan shipyard, many of the parts are modded from spare parts from Vasudan ships. Thus, their ships exhibit many of the properties of Vasudan ships; their turrets are nearly identical, and their engines work similarly as well (So they would have a yellow glow). However, later on, they will develop their own weaponry (magenta beams, or possibly some combination of multiple colors (it hasn't been done that I am aware of, I don't know if it's any good of an idea), not sure what color their cannons will be) and ship parts. However, their engines will always be yellow.
