Re: US cedes control over ICANN
That came out of nowhere. It's particularly wierd considering that US control over ICANN isn't even that controversial an issue, at least within the US, so I can't imagine that there would be too much public pressure to give it up.

Weird...

Wait - They did that voluntarily? That has almost got to be a smokescreen of some sort, what else is happening in the tech world that they might be trying to sneak under the radar?

Mandatory installation of monitoring devices?  Perhaps they want to great a pseudo 'great firewall of China'  (Except, er, not China) on top of a newly service/money-tiered national internet structure?  Or maybe they figure that if anyone steals their internet they can go and order a new one?

For some reason, when the US does something good voluntarily, I start questioning their motives.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Same here.  With Dubya in the House, something good happens, I get paranoid...fast.  I think now we just wait for the s*** to hit the fan from whatever they are trying to hide.

EDIT:  At least now we might not have to worry about Bush mucking with the Internet as much...

Bush (Verb) -- To do stupid things with confidence.

This year, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union Address occurred during the same week.  This is an ironic juxtaposition of events--one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication, while the other involves a groundhog.

Bumper stickers at my college:
"Republicans for Voldemort!"
"Frodo failed.  Bush got the Ring."
