Doesn't work on newer nVidia cards, natch; I had to return it :)

I remember it being fun even in my brief software-mode dalliance with it, though.

Offhand, they didn't bother their arse patching it (after budget release) to cope with the  post-4 range of cards.  I think there were some minor ATi issues too, not sure on that count.

(never tried the EP, I just had the plain budget game, so maybe the EP included the patch in typical EA style)

On the plus side, I accidentally forgot to return the 4th CD, so at least it cost them one sales.

Downloaded .ISOs for SC4 Deluxe [SC4 & Rush-hour], not a bad game. Ran rather well on my Gf4 4200, although... while it is fun to have a bustling commercial and residential city supported by a heavily industrialised city and agricultural city, it does get old after a while.

I'm a sucker for SimCity games. It doesn't run too bad on my less than average machine (AMD2600, Radeon 9550, 512MB), but I've never gotten any real big cities. Just a quite a few smaller ones.

hmmm

Really tempted to try SC4 again, there's nothing quite like it, especially as reviews hint CivCity is a bit gash.

SC4 has always entertained me up to a certain point. Rush Hour was one of the best expansion packs ever, however. :D

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

  • It's 5 minutes to midnight.
It doesn't work with my FX5200 with 128mb of VRAM. I have 512mb of RAM and a 2ghz celeron processor. I get a very bad effect in Rush Hour where the cars are turned green when driving behind buildings.

Got it. It's ok, with some interesting ideas, but not nearly the depth you get with the likes of Caesar or Children of the Nile. Half the fun of those games is doing the logistics blancing required to keep everyone happy, CivCity sort of all happens in a rush, it looks pretty, but it just lacks longevity in some way, not lack of atmosphere, it's very 'Roman' in style, but just something that appeals to me with Pharoah and others of their type. It's as though they've tried to make a high-adrenaline city-builder, which sort of defeats the point.

I thought you said Children of the Nile wasn't especially good or deep compared to the Pharoah games?

COtN isn't as good as Pharoah, it hasn't got the same diversity, it's still an interesting game, my biggest complaint with it was the transformatin over to 3D Engine over the old Isometric one meant that you had a hell of a lot less 'going on' in your city, or when you did, you got jerky framerates. I'll admit that since I've got the new Graphics Card it's a lot more enjoyable, though it still lacks variety compared to its predecessor.
