your privacy is invaded, they can gather information against you for any use.  They're already violating the law, and you don't want to stop them doing so, so you're enabling them violating other laws.

Precedent & opportunity.  Even if this information is only used initially for criminals, it's still available (both in terms of the ability to monitor and the ability to review stored information) for future governments to abuse.  Now, no democratic system can be totally immune from the rise of tyranny; even if you don't believe it will happen with this government, who knows what the next may bring.  So, any democratic countries needs controls that prevent possible abuse, oppression, tyranny, etc; if we begin removing the defenses we place to keep us secure and free (this applies not just to the US, but other countries and especially the UK), then all we suceed in doing is opening doors for the sort of ****ty, repressive government these democratic systems and protective laws were created to prevent.

Essentially, if you remove laws because you 'trust' the government, NSA, whatever to behave themselves, you only leave yourself open to that trust being abused.

The way I figure it, the US government is going to turn into an Orwell type "big-brother" totalitarian state and treat us all like cattle. If I thought there was something I could do about it other than wait for China to come and kill us all in our beds, I would. Unfortunately as I see it, I'm one person out of nearly 300 million, with no exceptional social skills, what am I going to do, other than whine? Besides, I'm going into computer forensics, I'll need to get a job somehow (hopefully a relatively uncorrupted local thing going after pedophiles and not a big, giant, scary, government organization going after John Smith, but I'm not burning any bridges if I can help it)

you do realize "going after pedophiles" is the single biggest overblown net boogeyman in existance... pedophiles on the net are about the easiest to detect and the least threatening.. the majority of sexual abuse of minors happens by family members of close family friends
