PS3 not in production yet
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6156046.html

More specifically, this part of the interview:

Quote
GS: So is the PS3 already being manufactured?

KH: We haven't started manufacturing yet. Some of our ops guys were actually just in China, and also in Japan just reviewing the [production] lines and everything else. But they are, again, preparing as we speak to get the manufacturing going. We've not announced and we haven't set really a specific date to say, "As of this day we're going to start manufacturing."

Isn't the release date just a couple of months away?
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Re: PS3 not in production yet
I'm not up with the latest in fabrication and assembly technology of electronics, but is it possible that they can they properly manufacture several million PS3s in just over 3 months?

Depends how many production lines they have, I guess.  I don't think it's clear if these are assembly lines or full on parts-manufacturing, is it?

Presumably, if it was a concern, they wouldn't mention it.  Not even Sony PR is that inept.

So if we start seeing major shortages, then we will know if it was mistake or not......

Supply and demand, they won't have the supply therefore the demand will be greater and the prices can be hiked up a little bit more!!

to be honest, I'd expect major shortages anyways.  In spite of Sonys abysmal marketing and pricing, there's a solid enough fanbase to ensure it sells out on release for anything except ludicrously oversized shipments.

Nope, but if GT5 is any good, it might convince me enough to start saving for one...

I will be once the price drops somewhat. I'm sorry to say Sony has me hooked with their exclusives.

You and me both, brother. Hell, I just might hijack a friend's console for a few days just so I can play it.

Re: PS3 not in production yet
I've been very happy with my PS2, but I must say the price for the next system is outrageous.  I'm actually considering the 360.  I'll wait regarding the Wii.  Nintendo has some great classics, but my Gamecube only has a couple titles.  The Wii needs some solid first-party games (none of these ****ty sports spin-offs.  Golf?  Soccer?  Tennis?  Bleh.) and even more solid third-party support.

Re: PS3 not in production yet
Meh, I can't afford it. All I can probably afford is the Wii if it's <$251. Rent costs too much, and job doesn't pay enough.  :(

Surely I'm not the only person finding the very concept of the Wii tremendously exciting, though?

Have you ever played Forza Motorsport and how does that compare to GT3 and GT4?

I'm almost considering a 360 (PS3 was never in the running for me) just for Forza 2.  But I'm a wait and see guy with these new consoles.  I got such a good deal on my XBox two years ago I think I'm going to wait for the same kind of deal on the 360.

Forza was quite good but it suffered from lazy AI. From your perspective they're either annoying robots who follow the racing line in a completely unrealisic fashion even if it means shunting you off at 200mph or; it's you against one car and 7 of his best, psychopath mates.

I play Colin McRae rally instead now.

I do as well, but often don't talk about it to avoid long debates with my friends.  ;) :p
