a frend of mine's 14 year old kid is doing the angsty teen thing, and I sugested useing a key logger to find out all of the stuff she's doing (as she is  apparently sneaking out and walking all over town in the middle of the night and going to boy's houses ect) online (IMs, myspace, chats, passwords, ect) so does anyone here knw of a simple easy to use key logger that can be installed on a computer (preferably set to one specific login name) and isn't going to send all this information off to the russian mob.

Probably something like Spectorsoft or SpyBuddy would be the best bet, however, I had to laugh at one of the comments on the Spybuddy site....

Why not just talk to the kid?

Should it be concerning that a parent can't solve a problem with normal means and have to resort to hacking or whatever. May I also add what happens if the kid finds out parents are spying on them. If it was me, and I had hormones flowing through me. I'd prob do the old runaroo...

Must admit, gotta land on Bobbs side here. Yes, it is sneaky and underhand, but if I was the girls parent, I would do exactly the same thing. Sometimes, as a parent,  you have to be sneaky and underhanded, especially if you feel that you are being lied to in the first place and that your child may be unknowingly walking into danger.

back in the day you could tell if your kid was going into the red light district by them not being in the house, you could follow them listen in on there conversations wich were face to face, today a kid can close out there myspace account were they have naked picks of themselves and directions to there house in a fraction of a second, they can have speachless conversations for hours with someone and you won't hear anyhting more than the clacking of keys sounding just like the clacks made by homework or something else, and the person they are talking to could be a frend from school someone there srewing a pedophile from Papua New Guini.

a parent needs all the tools they can get to help keep an eye on there kids, this is being responcable, going and makeing a huge effort to find out what is going on in there kid's life. it's a lot better than the typical not careing I find disturbingly comon in my culture.

besides it's her computer, she payed for it she has every right to install software on it as she see's fit. includeing software that monitors how other people are useing it.

Only $106, I use it to monitor my laptop even though i have a lockdown and coldstart utility, I find it helps when events happen that i wont go into.

Well, let's be honest here, this is a minor we're talking about, and the one thing the world needs is more parental responsibility - not less.  Let's say the mum does nothing and the kid gets knocked up, or raped, or mugged; then we have the likes of MySpace, YSM, forums, whatever blamed for it, when really it's something the parent could & should prevent it.

With an adult, it's plainly wrong to monitor internet and phone use.  With a minor, it's part of modern-day parental responsibility; and if you can't trust a teenage to act rationally, sensibly & be honest.....

I suppose it's better, in my opinion, to have a parent who is willing to monitor their child than the umpteen parents who run around going 'My child wanders the street at 4am causing trouble, what are the government going to do about it, that's what I'd like to know...'

Because one day, if enough people do it, the government will do something about it, and then the **** will really hit the fan.

Parental responsibility is just that, Parental responsibility. If anything happens they have no-one else to blame, Teenagers rebel, its just human nature when your hormones are up the spout.
