Yep. The only thing you need to do is make sure that the SCP launcher is set up to use default FS2 settings before you try to run retail. And you'll only need to do that if you actually run the SCP launcher.

Best thing to do is just to play FS2 retail and then install Open. You'll probably never want to go back anyway :)

Re: FS1 and FS2 Original in XP SP2
Thank you Karajorma, Headmaster sir. I am very grateful that was my very last questoin before intall which awaits the arrival of my "original" and "near mint" FS 1 plus expansion and FS2 ware.  I am very impatient.  Thanks so miuch. I feel quite deeply in debt to you and all here for the very warm welcome and kind answers to all my questoins,  and now I must work my way up through flight training, galley duty, wardroom cleaning, gun mount polishing, hull deck buffing, hatch cover maintenance, manual swotting, maybe sometime in the winter i will be mildly competent. ah well, it is a fine prospect, to look forward to, flying in FS for the first time I am glad I waited. thanks again. Roger and out.

Galley duty?  Sounds like you've been there, done that.  In the Coast Guard, and Navy, we call it "mess-cranking."  It absolutely sucks.  A 12-16 hour work day is normal.  You feel like a slave.  :ick:

Re: FS1 and FS2 Original in XP SP2
Yes, I have been there a bit, and have much respect for both navy and coasties, a lot of admiration and appreciatoin, and a long love of things naval, and interest in the history of both wet water and space naval.

I can see the space doctrine of carriers projected in the FreeSpace universe making some good sense, as the investment in capital ships was a tough part of wet water navies, in fleet actions and tactics, the little guys often did as much or more real damage than the big units, when I first studied fleet tactics there was still quite a bit of fleet doctrine that evolved in the dreadnought and battleship fleets, evolved by air tactics and carrier groups, fleet trains for logistics, and small unit effect........translated from fleet actions and cruiser destroyer support, and I am very interested to see how space or 3 dimensional tactics reflects those lesssons. Especially different species and how they may differ in doctrine and strategy and tactics.

The aim remains from what I have studied to apply the most force where your opponent has the least at the most important times, and to consider above all logistics, ours and theirs....and how light units, fighter forces can impact the most in both the offense and the defense.

I have much manual swotting to catch up, and hope to read up in the literature and manuals, I have the manuals for FS2 and the unit characteristics to learn, which is a good start.

But from what I have heard, (some from my own famiily whe were career navy, pilots, braiid wearers, in cans and subs, as well as surface, .....any capital unit down to the smallest crew sized ship runs on the galley, guts and grease monkey level no matter what the glory. ;)

Re: FS1 and FS2 Original in XP SP2
Sorry for the double post but wanted to report on my install of original version sof FS Descent plus the Add on campaign and FS2.

Both arrived this weekend and are installed!

The FS1 was a mint never opened copy of the odd double box with opposite sides and both the game and the add on campaign. Installed and runs fine.

FS2 was the Japanese imprint, but seems to be the full English edition. Three CD's and insert the second one to play. I did the full install and it runs fine no tweaking, or 98 compatability seems needed.  I have been very good and not peeked at 2, indeed havent yet begun my training, just looked at the into for FS1 and the hangar space with the various rooms.

So the adventure begins, thanks to all the help here from all in the community. My deepest appreciation and thanks. ;)

A word of advice: finish the main FS1 campaign before you install Silent Threat.  Silent Threat modifies the main hall music and some of the debriefing voices, both of which might interfere with your enjoyment of the original campaign.  If you've already installed Silent Threat, you should be able to uninstall it without trouble.

Also, don't forget to patch FS1 to version 1.06 and FS2 to version 1.2.  And keep a backup of the patched v1.06 executable for FS1, because Silent Threat overwrites it with version 1.04 (this is a bug).

Re: FS1 and FS2 Original in XP SP2
sorry for the double post but wondererd about the patching of FS1 and Silent Threat.....as below>>>.

Thanks Goober,

I found the Voloton site with the patches  I downloaded the patch from the site but it would not update my install, my install is 1.0.0.1 and the patch installer said old file not found, file found but contents did not match so update not completed. Do you wish to quit even though temporary files will not be removed?

I will check to see, maybe I have the European edition as I was trying the US patch.  So far, no joy.

and also saw there was an EAX support patch for 1.06, I will have to check the box on my new discs to be sure what release I hve, the USA or the UK or whatever to be sure and I saw that there is a patch about to update Silent Threat to 1.06, is this real or just something labeled so without being so?

It is was listed at http://icculus.org/~taylor/freespace/

  as    SilentThreat original release to 1.06 update: st-1.06.run (md5) - (822k)

Just wondered.  I will follow your instructions. thanks
chris

Yeah, make sure you're using the proper versions of the patches.  Several different versions of the game were released.

The icculus.org patch is only for the Linux release.

Re: FS1 and FS2 Original in XP SP2
Thanks Goober, My version appears to be indeed an original either 1.0.0.1 or 1.03, am not sure for sure,

I have been trying to patch it up since last night, but so far the North America, the UK, and also the world patch do not want to complete the patch to 1.06, i get an error notice saying the old file can't be found and that a file is found but the contents are not the same. The french and german patches do not work either.

I just doenloaded all the earlier patches to try when I get home from work today,
1.03.1
1.04
1.05
1.06 from Game Spot
to see if i can patch it up gradually. I did find one old site that said that the original release was not patchable, but they may have been talking about the Descent games, and NOT
Descent Freespace, it was not clear. I will keep trying.
thanks
-----------------------------------------------------------
After trying all patches...

 :blah: :) I tried all the patches out for FS1 and none of them would update, all said Old File not found, A file was found but contents not the same. The install is still running. Temporary files will not be deleted if you cancel now.

So I give up. I will play unpatched and enjoy it as a historic install.

Thanks for the posts.

Goober you are brilliant.

As soon as i looked at the Main Hall carefully I saw why you suggested that, there in the lower right hand corner was the version number, it is already updated to 1.06 and it also said 3D ready or something like that. I will still try to get a screenshot, first one came out very dark. I am so grateful to you, after all my messing around with patches, now I have a great collection of all the FS1 patches ever made. thanks again so much. I will be sure to put a note on my other thread too. thanks again. ;) ;)
