I sugegst you get TS and jsut export the model there. Teh texture mapping stays, so all you need to do is set up the turrets.

That or give the mship to someone else to turret :D

I think I'll stick with MV and PCS, for a while.
I have created a masterpiece.

I'd like to personally advise that you do not try to work in TS. Having used it, and Max, I can say, honestly, that TS makes extremely unstable geometry very easily.

But some of us do not have the $600+ to buy Max, and since G-Max is no longer offered.....

So you have the $595 to buy Truespace, is what you're saying?

But Truespace 3.2 is free.

After playing around with it I'm inclined to agree.

Yet, it is the only free (or inexpensive) 3D modeller that I have yet found. So far, it has suited my needs.

I have never had any problems with TS myself, in fact I find it easier to use than 3D MAX 7..

You're opinion, but you'll find that few others share it.  Especially in comparison to TS 3.2.  I have to agree with Raa 100%.  The most recent versions of Truespace are usable and can produce stable models, but the free version (which is the only real discussion here) is absolutely useless.  It's functionality is not worth the download except as a conversion vehicle, and if you've already got Max then you're taking 10 steps back for one forward especially since it's rare to get a stable intermediate mesh.  And recovering stability in TS3.2 is impossible.

But does it handel the 3ds exporter? Thats what I have problems on, I don't use truespace I use 3DS Max 7. I can't just parent a few objects and get results. THe exporter needs point helpers, paths, dummies and the geometry and I don't know exactly how to link them up. So far the turrets don't read any firepoints.

Best source on making the exporter work with autogen is the example POF that came with the plugin.  One of the most important things to remember is that the names of subobjects are important, the other is that the even if everything is right, the exporter will still crash at least 50% of the time.  I've got a couple of larger models with the heirarchy set up that I should put up for examples too; PM me if you'd like one of them to look at.  Or stick to modelview and PCS, which you can't totally avoid anyway.

Now that's a pretty unfair comparison. Max isn't freely available either. It's not really in any way valid to compare a piece of software that has either been *liberated* or bought at considerable expense against the free version of a program rather than the version which has been obtained under similar circumstances.

I paid for my 3ds legally. And yeah I admit, expensive but it works out. To me, 3ds Max's best feature is probably its simple camera controls. I found that in Truespace I had to individually press a icon to move a certain way while in 3ds its all done in all axes with just the mouse and alt button. This makes working much faster. I understand the dillema here, price over quality can be a daunting decision especially when it comes to modeling software. Its much like Gmax, its free but not as useful as the real thing.
I have created a masterpiece.

There is no more GMAX, but I have to say that the one with the higher price is a better quality...

It depends to a fair degree what you are used to as well. Vasudan Admiral produces some of the best 3D models I've seen, and he does it in Blender. Personally, I could probably just about Bevel a cube in Blender.

This always ends up the the 'Best OS' or 'Best Console' arguments, it's really down to personal taste :)

We should have a model-off.  Origin of the winning model proves which program is bestest :D

Wouldn't work out. A program's strength can be outdone by a person's skill with another program. Its a balance that many people vary in and varies in their tastes. I, for example, favor 3ds Max and Maya's superior camera (possibly) usage which allows me to work on a model quickly and efficiently. I have also come to like 3ds spline modeling in which I can make something with incredible control and flexibility.

Though I used Truespace for conversions once, the camera controls kills it (in my tastes). I have only used blender for like 2 minutes so I wouldn't know. Also I feel like that contest might just turn into a flame war.

Mine would win, because I'm not running Linux and I didn't buy an X-Box 360 :p ;)
