Can't run FS2 or FS2_Open
I finally took the time to try out FS2 (or at least that was my plan).  I can't comment on how it actually plays yet, but it certainly looks amazing.

Sadly, I can't get FS2 or FS2_Open to run on my computer.  Juding from the error message, I think I may actually have too much RAM...  Here is the error I'm getting when I try to run FS2 retail or FS2_Open 3.6.9:

"Not Enough RAM

FreeSpace has detected that you only have 0MB of free memory.

FreeSpace requires at least 32MB of memory to run.  <snip, useless text>
"

I am 100% certain that isn't true since I actually have 8 GB of physical memory and roughly 7 GB of it is free.  Here are my relevant system specs:

Dual Opteron 275's
8 GB RAM
Dual GeForce 7600GT's
Windows XP x64

Anyone have any suggestions?  I Googled, searched the forums, hit the Wiki, and checked just about everywhere I could think of and haven't gotten anywhere.  I've also tried running things in Windows 95, 98, and 200 compatibility modes with no success.

Welcome to HLP! Exits are to the right and left. In the event of a landing of any kind, you can and will be used as a flotation device. Flamethrowers are conviniently located under your seats, however, due to the recent funding cuts, a $3.5 million donation is required to obtain a flamethrower with a full load of napalm in it. If you do not wish to make a donation, your flamethrower will remain filled with water. If you don't wish to donate and still want a working weapon, you'd have to try the weapons locker. However, only HLP Admins, a [V] God, or a Hyperintelligent shade of Blue can open the lock, so you'd have to break in. If you find yourself inside a ventilation shaft and you catch a glimpse of a Shivan, you don't need to worry... much. It's just Carl, and you have two choices with how you want to deal with him:
    1. The first possible course of action is getting one of the weapons from the afore-mentioned weapons locker, and trying to ward off Carl by threatening him with the weapon. Be advised that many of the weapons in the weapons locker are covered with the blood of people who thought it a good idea to break into the weapons locker and use the procured weapon to ward off Carl. So, please, if you decide you want to choose this course of action, choose one of the already-bloody weapons, so you don't get blood all over one of the clean ones.
   2. Your second course of action when you see Carl is to throw your lunch to him and hope he isn't hungry. This is the better option.
As a final note, please remember that any attempt to use the ASCII characters 0046h, 0053h, and 0033h in sequential order will result in you being trampled by Freespace Fanboys. Your trampled remains will be fed to Carl so that the rest of us don't have to carry around so much food for lunch.

probably the best place to ask this would be in the SCP section, as they do most of the actual coding stuff around here.

that being said, there's not many ppl on right now. all the poor little british ppl went to bed hours ago.

you might have to wait until tommorow for a good answer.

<----- 'Cept this one ;)

It could be something to do with the incredible amount of RAM you actually have, that's a helluva powerful system!

Dual core shouldn't bea problem in later versions, I don't know about Dual chip systems, I would assume the same. The only thing I can think is it's something to do with the way that your computer reports how much RAM is has available doesn't get on with FS2.

Anyway, I'm going to move this to the SCP Forum because you're more likely to get help there :)

Cool, thanks for the welcome and for pointing me in the right direction.

And yes, I really love this computer.  :D  HP has great deals on workstations like this on their refurb site from time to time.

Re: Can't run FS2 or FS2_Open
Eeek!  I knew that was going to bite someone someday.  The game math involved only supports 2G, the function to get the amount of memory only supports 4G.  Obviously you go over both quite easily. :)

It can be fixed without too much trouble though (it would only be supported on Win2k+, so we'll have to support the old stuff too), so I'll add that to my list of things to do tomorrow.

I thought it was going to be something like that.  Sadly this isn't the first time having this much memory has bit me.  Thanks for taking a look in to it, and please let me know if there's anything you need me to help debug or test.

If you really want to play right now, simply use your old computer.

Can't you tell an application to run in compatibility mode?

Re: Can't run FS2 or FS2_Open
Yes, too much memory can be a bad thing.  I think I've had more trouble because of the 8 GB than the 64-bit OS.

Sadly my old computer is now a file server; the video card was moved to what will someday be a media PC.

I did try running it in compatibility mode, but that didn't help.  Apparently even in compatibility mode it still sees the 8 gigs and goes insane.  :)

Re: Can't run FS2 or FS2_Open
I'll probably PM you a test build later today.  It still won't fully support 8gig (apparently that can only happen if we go Win2k+ only), but it will properly support 4gig, and it shouldn't freak out if you have more than that.  If you use any of the memory display stuff (debug) then it would only give you ">4G", rather than a real/accurate number.

That sounds great, I look forward to trying it out.  Thanks again for tackling this issue for me.
