FS Noob, need help with Freespace 1 Mod
Hello,

Freespace noob here, I downloaded and installed the 1.5c pack, upgraded to 1.8, and then to 1.9c.  It seems to be working fine other than a Microsoft Access install sequence firing up each time I start up the Launcher.  I decided since I had never played any Freespace that I would start with the Freespace 1 mod (Freespace Port v3).  It seems to be working fine, looks good.  I start a new campaign and it takes me into the Training Mission, it seems to be working fine, I follow directions, I get to the go to Maximum Speed part by hitting your '\' button.  I do this and then nothing.... there are no more instructions and I cannot finish the Training Mission.  Can anyone help please?  I have not made any changes to my Keyboard configuration.  I searched in this forum but found nothing concerning this issue in the training mission.

I'm running Win 2000, Audigy Sound, AMD Athlon XP 1900, Asus Nforce MB, running OpenGL.

Welcome to HLP! Exits are to the right and left. In the event of a landing of any kind, you can and will be used as a flotation device. Flamethrowers are conviniently located under your seats, however, due to the recent funding cuts, a $3.5 million donation is required to obtain a flamethrower with a full load of napalm in it. If you do not wish to make a donation, your flamethrower will remain filled with water. If you don't wish to donate and still want a working weapon, you'd have to try the weapons locker. However, only HLP Admins, a :V: God, or a Hyperintelligent shade of Blue can open the lock, so you'd have to break in. If you find yourself inside a ventilation shaft and you catch a glimpse of a Shivan, you don't need to worry... much. It's just Carl, and you have two choices with how you want to deal with him:
    1. The first possible course of action is getting one of the weapons from the afore-mentioned weapons locker, and trying to ward off Carl by threatening him with the weapon. Be advised that many of the weapons in the weapons locker are covered with the blood of people who thought it a good idea to break into the weapons locker and use the procured weapon to ward off Carl. So, please, if you decide you want to choose this course of action, choose one of the already-bloody weapons, so you don't get blood all over one of the clean ones.
   2. Your second course of action when you see Carl is to throw your lunch to him and hope he isn't hungry. This is the better option.
   As a final note, please remember that any attempt to use the ASCII characters 0046h, 0053h, and 0033h in sequential order will result in you being trampled by Freespace Fanboys. Your trampled remains will be fed to Carl so that the rest of us don't have to carry around so much food for lunch.




make sure you're running 3.6.9 RC7 with Media vp's and patches ( if you don't know what to do, say so).


you could always skip the training mission.

just learn from the control config screen.



as always, if you have any trouble, just look at this. in fact, make it your homepage, bookmark it, and print it out and staple it to your dog.

You need to 1) hit the Max Speed button (make sure that if you remapped your keys that you hit the correct new key) and 2) keep your speed between 61 and 66 m/s for two seconds.  Try doing it again; maybe it didn't register.

This is not the first time I've heard this bug within the last month or so. I don't ever remember hearing of it before. I suspect something changed.

Thanks again for the responses and help guys, I do also suspect it's a bug.  Missions have event triggers, I'm performing the action required to trigger the next event, at least according to what the mission requested.  Go to Max Speed.  I have not altered my keyboard config, so I hit the '\' button I see my speed go to Max or 70.  Then I wait for my next action, and wait, and wait...

I would like to complete the Training since I'm a shiny new noob but I'll manage without it.

The first couple of missions are a walk in the ****ing park. You should have no problem.

I see my speed go to Max or 70.

70 is too high.  Look at your speed gauge and make sure your max speed is set at 65.  Try using the PageUp/PageDown keys to adjust it if it's not in range.

It would seem my problem is mod related.  I downloaded the large 2 Gig bittorrnet file.  So I'm using the FS2 5.3 Launcher.  I switched to the Freespace Port v3 mod.  Then Ran it.  I got the FS 1 beginning movie; where the lone damaged pilot is returning to base.  And I'm 99% sure I got the FS 1 Start screen where you choose campaigns, options, exit, etc.  But when it starts the Campaign it is going into the FS 2 one I am sure, since it is using the Myrmidon ship.  I then went back and loaded the 'Media VP' mod and ran it.  This training was just like what I saw when trying to run the FS 1 mod but it worked correctly.

 Now when I go back and try and run the FS 1 mod I get errors, after I pick a pilot I get a "Invalid ship, Myrmidon..." message.

So I am 99% sure I'm not doing something right to run the FS 1 mod.  Do I need to edit my mod.ini file?!?!

Nope. Go to the launcher's mod tab and choose FS1Port (or whatever ShivanSPS called it) as your mod. Then run the game. You should see the FS1 intro again. Now choose your pilot. Now look for the campaign room on the main screen. This will allow you to pick the FS1 campaign. By default FS2 always attempts to run the FS2 campaign even when that isn't sensible.

The SCP are aware of this and IIRC Taylor's got a fix for this in 3.7

Thanks Kara I figured it out before I read your post, that was it, I did not realize I had to pick the campaign.

So we are GTG.
