Curious about Oil? Alaska? Read this...
http://www.facsnet.org/tools/energy/kaufmann.php

An interesting and informed look at the oil "problem". Quotes not meant to indicate that there is not an impending oil crisis, they just seemed appropriate.

Thought it was an interesting read, thought you guys might enjoy it as well.

im all for opening anwar, not for the country, not for the world. but for the ****ing state. alaska is a ****ing pis poor place to live. were ****ing 50 years behind the times. there are hardly any roads. you cannot drive to the capital. you cant move goods arount cheaply. sure we got the best small aircraft infrastructure, without it we couldnt exist, but our acess to big airlines is ****ty at best. the southeast's airports only accomidate 737s and equivelant aircraft, and the only airline that flies to them is alaska, which likes to gouge on the price. anchorage accomidates slightly more airlines but not many.

if you compair us to scandinavvia youl find a pretty much equivalent climate and natural resources, however they have a much richer way of life and their towns dont look like total slums. and theyre not full of hippies and hard core conservatives, noone in the middle and all consume about the same amount of weed. and we dont even have a decent metal band. god damn this place sucks. ****im moving to norway :D

besides that we do have some of the most advanced drill sites of anywhere, capable of horizontal drilling, to reach a number of deposits with a single drillsite. if youre worried about the envirionment dont be, anwar is a vast expanse of nothingness, setting up a drill tower would only give the wildlife some scenery to look at. maybe offer a few humanoid snacks to polar bears. by far the native alaskans kill more critters than the white people do. all in the name of tribal customs. this place really is a joke though :D

Sounds like a problem with governance to me.

It sounds like you really hate Alaska, do you have plans to move somewhere else?

The problem with alaska is that it is so FRACKIN huge and doesn't have any real industry except tourism. However the federal gov't and people that don't live there like to also tell the people of Alaska what they can or can't do with their land.
Government is the great fiction through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else.

Also if you constantly elect officials who do not wish the improve the infrastructure, then it will not improve.

Alaska has had the oil industry for several decades now, and those are some of the richest companies around.....

Re: Curious about Oil? Alaska? Read this...
It is a challenge. But also keep in mind that alaska has a sparse population and any money spent on infrastructure wouldn't go very far.

Yes there is the alaskan oil fields and companies. But those oil companies also drill all over the country not just in alaska. Alaska could stop paying its residence $1500 for living in the state and put that money to public works aswell.

I am not defending republicans only pointing out the uniqueness of the situation.

first off the divident is not always $1500, in fact the last one was $850, and the one im getting here in next month will be $1106. it goes up and down with how much the oil companies are getting out of the ground. they were having some problems with the smaller pipelines that lead to the mane pipeline from the drill sites, whih was reducing throughput to cause a big drop in profits. theese problems seem to have been resolved for now, and they may once again move up to the $1500 mark.

that said alaska is a very expensive place to live. its got some ****ing expensive real-estate, considering the amount of land we have. and yes its true, blowing that money on infrastructure wouldnt do it a bit of good. the number of poor people in alaska is so great that every time the vote comes to end or reduce the dividend it fails miserably.

Also if you constantly elect officials who do not wish the improve the infrastructure, then it will not improve.

thats a trickey subject. governement in alaska is highly decentralized. alaska's constitution give more power to the individual communities. for example every town has its own sales tax, last i checked anchorage had none, uneau currently has a 5% sales tax. some towns and viliges have their own local prohibitions. they tried one in barrow for a couple years awhile back and it failed miserably. anyway the point is the way alaska is set up takes away power from the state level. so the hands of state offitials are tied when it comes to alot of issues.

I live in Alaska too. But I like some people don't spend my PFD on stupid things. It helps me with the heating bills, phone, electric and other stuff. When it gets about 50 below you are kind of glad you got the extra money to heat your home. All I have got to say. ;)

It is :) But even though it's about the same latitude, we've got a much warmer climate than Alaska due to the gulf stream and having a coastal rather than continental climate, so you can't really compare it. I guess you could say it's a temperate Alaska with the oil out at sea instead of on-land, and (probably) with a considerably higher proportion of tall, blonde women in the population :p

We still have our ultra-conservatives and general xenophobes though. Just can't escape those no matter where you go it seems. And our roads are full of holes too since the politicians are too busy making false promises instead of actually getting around to, you know, fixing stuff. Which is about par for the course for any politician, so no surprise there.

this is very true. when you consider how much everything costs. people arent gonna give up their heat money for the government to build something. for me though heat money means a geforce 7950 gx2 :D

i guess trading one set of political douchebages for another isnt that bad. the tall blond women would be another advantage over the few butt ugly dogs that alaska has to offer. combine that with the most awesome black metal of anywhere and you have one hell of a country :D

Countries ;) All of Scandinavia fits that bill quite nicely, though Norway and Finland probably have the upper hand in the metal department. They also have the coldest climates of the lot so you'd feel right at home. Expect for the bit about not understanding a word of what anyone is saying, of course. And you better like football (real football), or you'd be bored out of your skull during every sports programme on TV.
