My System Performance in FSO: Help? pretty please?
Hi, I'm new to the forums. (I was busy trying to complete the FS2 main campaing... it's hard... i can't get past the a nebula mission against he pegasus fighters.)

anyway.. i've been snooping around the threads but can't find a definitive answer to my current concern...

FSO's loadtime each scenario.... it takes so long for each mission to load now. Is there a way to fix this?

anyway.. to make things simpler to figure out, here are my computer's information:

-ASUS P4PEX-X motherboard
-Pentium 4 1.8 Ghz processor
-512mb DDR2 memory (x2)
-ATI Radeon 9550 Sapphire 256mb video card (with current catalyst drivers installed)
-Windows XP Home Edition (patched up to the current hotfix and updates)
-40Gb Western Digital HD (primary master)
-40Gb Maxtor HD (secondary master)
-40Gb Seagate HD (backup + storage)
-Freespace 2 CDs
-Freespace 2 Open ver.3_6_9

....on another note, the game slows down to a crawl everytime the shivan warships fire their superlasers...

am i doing something wrong with the features in the launcher's options?

forgot to mention the Media_VPs that are currently active in the MOD:

mp-710_adveffects.vp
mp-710_effects.vp
mp-710_models.vp
mv_adveffects.vp
mv_core.vp
mv_effects.vp
mv_models.vp
mv_music.vp
mv_textures.vp

do i disable some of these to make the laser choke go away?

Well... you might want to take out adv_effects for starters.

I wept. Mysterious forces beyond my ken had reached into my beautiful mission and energized its pilots with inhuman bomb-firing abilities. I could only imagine the GTVA warriors giving a mighty KIAAIIIIIII shout as they worked their triggers, their biceps bulging with sinew after years of Ivan Drago-esque steroid therapy and weight training. - General Battuta

superlaser choking's gone, thanks... though the loadtime's still a killer... i play late at night when there's a lull in the cybercafe's customer flux... and i end up falling asleep whenever the loadtime takes long.. i find myself waking up once the briefing begins XD

oh yeah.. LAN co-op missions are great.

Re: My System Performance in FSO: Help? pretty please?
First question - are you running in OpenGL or DirectX rendering mode? OpenGL is heavily recommended these days since there are apparently no DirectX dedicated coders amongst Source Code Project staff.

Second question. Are you using a CVS build of 3.6.9, or release candidate builds? Recent CVS builds have serious issues with frame rates on anything related to... well, pretty much anything doing something, to be honest.

Other thing - you don't actually need the FS2 cd's to play, unless you're playing the original campaign cutscene movies from them.

You could also post your command line options here, but unless you have something seriously wrong there (some troubleshooting features, like "Software mode" could result in *slow* performance) I don't think that's the main culprit. At first impression I would point the blaming/flaming finger onto your ATi card. However, I am deeply suspicious of anything coming from ATi, so that definitely affects my opinion... It might be something else altogether. ;)

Long loading times might just point to the fact that the PC has a lower mid-end CPU and rather limited amount of RAM. There might be nothing more to it than that. You can, however, reduce loading times by unselecting "Preload mission game sounds" option in the Features tab... it's in the "Audio" list of selectable options. If you have it ticked, you may reduce the load times by unticking it but that comes with a price I think - the sounds load then during the mission, causing possible lag there.

Re: My System Performance in FSO: Help? pretty please?
Current Hardware:
ECS-KT600A
AMD Semperon 1.66 Ghz Socket 462
2x512 Corsair XMS DDR PC3200
Sapphire Radeon 9600 XT, Catalyst 4.12
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 w/OpenAL 1.2
Windows XP Pro SP2 with RyanVM Post SP2 UpdatePack
100 GB Maxtor SATA OS Drive
WD 200 GB IDE Storage Drive

Contents of MediaVPs folder:
mv_adveffects.vp <- with mp-710_adveffects.vp merged
mv_core.vp
mv_effects.vp <- with mp-710_effects.vp and a_subspace.vp merged
mv_models.vp <- with mp-710_models.vp merged
mv_music.vp
mv_textures.vp <-with ls_neb.vp merged
oaburner.vp

Command Line:
C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_r.exe -mod mediavps -spec -glow -env -jpgtga -mipmap -2d_poof -no_vsync -cache_bitmaps -dualscanlines -targetinfo -orbradar -ship_choice_3d -3dwarp -snd_preload -alpha_env -fps  -ambient_factor 18 -spec_exp 16 -spec_point 0.6 -spec_static 0.9 -spec_tube 1.1

OpenGL, 1280x1024x32, Trilinear, 8x Anisotropic (And 8x Anti-Aliasing set in driver), RC7dot8 of 3.6.9.

And even with adveffects I have absolutely no issues. Just to show that, when you know what you're doing, even ATI is not a problem. I test every catalyst release driver and in the end I come back to the 4.12's for this particular card, irregardless of what other hardware it's on. (It even manages FarCry & HL2 with amazing wellness.)

I don't modify just anything though. I'm not overclocked on _anything_. I have carefully managed to set my BIOS options and OS defaults to (for this machine) tried and true results. Minimal amount of services running, many windows applications replaced with better alternatives (WMP replaced with MediaPlayer Classic, for ex.) and I can even forget to close trillian and winamp 5 before playing and still have no issue.

thanks for the response, everyone..

anyway... as my answer.

first question:  I didn't know you could run this thing on Direct3D.. I thought, since the software's name is Freespace Open, that it'd use the OpenGL ability on my card.  I even had the OpenAL installed for this as per recommendation.

second question:   Were there different downloads for the 3_6_9?   i got this off the SCP forums >_> I had no idea about the variety.. how do I check?

other points:    I'm somewhat a bit of a ditz so... how do I put command line in here? err, i mean.. where can it be found in the launcher?   I chose the Full Features option in the dropdown list given in the launcher so i don't know which'd be on or off..

thanks for everyone's time...  i could really use your help.

Re: My System Performance in FSO: Help? pretty please?
Open the launcher.. go to Features tab, write the additional command line options to the Custom flags line. You can read your current full command line from the window above the 'Easy setup' option.

Then...

Read Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ

For additional info you can read the Command Line Reference from FSwiki.

First, check that you really are running in OpenGL. IIRC the Launcher defaults to DirectX despite the fact that OpenGL is better supported (or at least it did this at some phase... might be changed by now), so check that you have the option turned to OpenGL, as that might already change things for the better. How to do that:

-Open Launcher
-Go to "Video" tab

-Check that in the "Graphics" line it reads "OpenGL" instead of "Direct3D8".

Secondly, OpenAL has nothing to do with graphics renderer option. OpenAL is a sound vendor system developed openly by Creative Labs, and Freespace Open uses it currently as its sound vendor.

The "Open" part in Freespace Open just announces that the project is Open Source, as opposed to commercial closed source programs. ;)

3.6.9 has not been released yet AFAIK... so what you have is either a release candidate build (if so, good) or a CVS build (if so, not so good).

So, you got your build from SCP forums - as in, from http://scp.indiegames.us/forum.php?

If so, I would bet that you're actually better off finding a suitable build from our own HLP's Source Code Project forum's Recent Builds subforum. Here's the direct link, although you should be able to find it via forum navigation also: Source Code Project -> Recent Builds

If you don't want to bother, here is the most recent 3.6.9 Release Candidate build:

3.6.9 RC7.8

When the 3.6.9 is officially released (shouldn't be too long from now), it'll replace the ancient "latest official release" in SCP pages, which is 3.6.7... and it's buggy as hell compared to latest 3.6.9 RC builds, if I recall correctly.

Wanderer already told you... So I'm just going to post my own command line for reference. BTW I don't recommend selecting "All features on", as selecting the features by hand gives much better control for actually selecting things that you want to select. There's not that much of them, and most of them are pretty describingly named so it shouldn't be too much of a problem to just tick the necessary ones by hand.

Here's what I use:

C:\Games\Freespace2 SCP\fs2_open_r.exe -mod mediavp368zeta -spec -glow -env -jpgtga -mipmap -2d_poof -missile_lighting -img2dds -no_vsync -cache_bitmaps -dualscanlines -targetinfo -orbradar -rearm_timer -ship_choice_3d -3dwarp -warp_flash -snd_preload -alpha_env -fps  -ambient_factor 18.3 -spec_exp 16.7 -spec_point 0.6 -spec_static 0.9 -spec_tube 1 -fov 0.60

But check the 3.6.9RC7.8 build, see how that one works out and we'll see what to do after that, m'kay? :D

Re: My System Performance in FSO: Help? pretty please?
it doesn't show anywhere to choose D3D or Open GL...

i'm going to try a bit more with the links you gave... i'll report what happens.

oh yeah... after the tweaks, FS1 mod went awfully dark... like.. i don't see a thing dark. XD gamma problems?

Re: My System Performance in FSO: Help? pretty please?
My guess would be ambient_factor setting. If used without proper shine and glow maps it might make the game a bit too dark... However with mediavps it makes the game look a lot better.

In FS Open launcher the D3D vs OGL selection is on the Video tab. Do not (try to) use the retail launcher with FS Open.

Re: My System Performance in FSO: Help? pretty please?
thank you very much for all your help!

the loadtime's slightly faster now... I think I can bear with it.

and i dont get the choke on the advanced effects.. even explosions look pretty without me getting choked.

all i have to worry about now is finishing the darned nebula missions.
