wth is motion debris, and why would I want to disable it?

Re: wth is motion debris, and why would I want to disable it?
Motion Debris is that junk you see flying past your screen to indicate that you are, in fact, moving.
FSOpen has the option to turn it off because it is more realistic to play w/o it. There would be know random blobs floating around for you to fly past, after all...

Am I the only one who likes the motion debris?  I mean, sure it could look a billion times better, and it's unrealistic as heck, but I've grown so accustomed to seeing it that Freespace seems somewhat... empty without it.  *shrug*

Those debris are the remains of A1's wingmen... I don't see what's so unrealistic about it

Yeah, I've always liked it to.  I always figure it's bits of "space litter."  I mean, when you travel in well-used space lanes, you're bound to see something someone dropped.

Maybe if we had someone draw new high res debris it would look better...

Nothing about FS is realistic... There's no newtonian physics, we can hear enemy ships fly past us, hear lasers, missiles, explosions... etc. Why should this be removed on the basis of not being "realistic"?

Well of COURSE it would have to be unrealistic, how boring do you think FS would be without a colorful assortment of sounds? :P

You would be able to hear your lasers and missiles fire, and the only time you could hear the missile explode is if you were right next to it. Depending on what matter (if any) spews out of FS engines you might be able to hear it if you were right in its trail. FS ships might also possibly have some crazy thing that somehow compensates for the physics.

The most glaringly inaccurate thing about fs is the physics, most modern jets travel faster than the fighters.

FS2 ships don't need to be fast - they have subspace drives :D

Precisely.  Who needs to be able to hit .001c when you can make it to Saturn in three seconds? :p

Re: wth is motion debris, and why would I want to disable it?
Lots and lots of space sims use space debris to give the player a sense of movement.  Otherwise, the player may not know the difference between standing still and moving.  FS's debris is a lot better than other games, like XW Alliance.

Re: wth is motion debris, and why would I want to disable it?
Yeah, I leave it on mainly for that reason. It often feels like you're sitting still with the debris turned off, and I don't think it looks all that bad anyway.

Because it's bloody annoying for screenshots to be ruined by a large, pixelated hunk of rock that's "rotating" at about one frame per second.

If you find FS2's sound unrealistic, there's an option to turn that off too. It's called the power button for your speakers. :p
