New to FreeSpace, please help
I really want to play these games because I've heard great things about them and I want to start with FreeSpace 1

I installed the game and everything seemed fine, except it never asked me to insert the second CD during the installation.  So I checked to see what is on the second CD and I found it had a data folder containing some .mve movie files (and some demos, which I just ignored).  So I copied them into the data folder in my c:\games:\FreeSpace folder just to be sure.  Would that ensure that I'll see these movies?  Did I even need to do that?  I just want everything to be perfect.

Also, I heard about a FreeSpace port to FreeSpace 2?  But I searched and the site wouldn't load, so I'm confused.  I have FreeSpace 2, so if you recommend experiencing the first game this way, then I could do so, providing it exits of course!

Thanks in advance!  I look forward to experiencing these classic space-sims!

The SCP additions, and port only run on FS2.  The port is pretty good, as close as you can get to playing FS1 without playing the actual FS1 game, (although a few may tell you different) it's probably easier to use the port, which will give you the new enhanced graphics and everything.  I have no idea if FS1 works under XP, assuming your're using XP, which is why I'd say go for the port.

The site won't load either untill the DNS entries for this domain have been updated, that might be the problem.

Well I managed to find myself here:

After reading some stuff it seemed like a complicated task to get all of that setup so I'll give it a go tomorrow.

It isn't supposed to ask for the second cd. When you play the main campaign fo FS1 it will ask you to insert cd2 when necassary.

Right, an FS1 install has all the data on disc 1, the movies are on Disc 2, halfway through the campaign, it will ask for the disc.  It's actually not that hard to get everything set up right. Just follow the instructions on the hosted page for the FSPort, and you'll be on your way.  You also might want to put in the MediaVP's if you're wanting to see the improved graphics.

FS1 works fine under XP. Until I heard about FS2 (and the SCP), I'd been playing FS1 for ages.

Well, FS1 will work fine under XP...but it looks like s**t

plus, the "Failure To Communicate" mission has some glitch where it takes the GVD Hope fuhreaking forever to get to its waypoints...not sure if it even ever gets there.
the problem is fixed in the port :)
