As I've started work on a few of my own campaigns and storyline arcs, I've begun to notice a pattern in my thinking.  To a one, all of my campaigns revolve around a story told from the point of view of Terrans or Vasudans.  Whether they be mercenaries, GTVA military, or any other organization you can think of, its always the same two races everytime.  Now of course most campaigns fall into this category, and besides a few of the more original campaign ideas where you fly as the Shivans, there's never a real change in perspective.

That's what I'd like to change.

Now, we can argue the merits of a plausible storyline for that which must not be named until we're all old and grey.  The point is, any post Capella era campaign makes assumptions about what's going to happen to the GTVA.  That's alright of course, its perfectly natural to want to explore the possibilities for the future of the Terran and Vasudan races, but unfortunately no one can ever come up with a unified vision.

Now its been suggested before, and rejected, that the HLP community band together and make their own version of that which must not be named.  Of course, as has been stated before, no one can come up with a single story arc that everyone can agree on.  That's natural, everyone has different ideas and different visions of where the future will take the GTVA.

But what if we take a different approach?

Who's to say that the Terrans and Vasudans are the only races in their galaxy?  Who's to say there might not be other, less advanced races still battling one another for supremacy without any knowledge of the Shivans?  What if, to create a parallel here, there were two such races duking it across the width and breadth of their territory using subspace?  Granted, its only recently become standard practice for them, but such a large amount of activity is bound to attract some unfriendly attention.

Now suppose, just suppose here, that the GTVA (without getting into any details on what has actually happened with earth and other unanswered questions), becomes aware of these two races before the Shivans, and is monitoring them to ensure that the Shivans don't return to destroy another homeworld?  Suppose they do so secretly, slowly watching the rise in subspace activity and destruction that will incur the wrath of the Shivan armada?

My plan is simple, take one of these two new races and tell the story from their perspective.  Vary them greatly to ensure two unique sides, and create a full scale war for them to be involved in.  Without going into the particulars of the story too much, what do you think the GTVA would do if these two empires brought the Shivans down on their own heads?  Would they step in and help, or stand by and watch the destroyers wipe out another civilization?

Granted this would be a somewhat ambitious project.  You'd need an expert team of modellers to craft not only a new fleet of Terran, Vasudan, and Shivan ships, but also the various vessels for the two new species.  New weapons would have to be devised, and a massive amount of work put in to coming up with all the particulars.  I think that it is worth exploring however, and I just wanted to gather some additional opinions and get a kind of feel for what everyone would think about such a project.

Wow... you just almost perfectly described a campaign idea that I had months ago! :eek2:

Don't worry, I dropped it. I had this whole storyline set up and stuff, but lack of truly alien models (not Terran, Vasudan, Shivan, Ancient, Nightmare, or from some other Sci-Fi program) kinda killed it. I thought about doing it with some of Nuke's models, but they bore too close a resemblence to aforementioned races...

I say to you: go for it!

I had an idea in my head of something similar.

Essentially it's part of a big, long storyline which I had thought up fairly recently (and will likely never finish). Long story short, a mixed-bag fleet of 320,000 or so people (composed of civilians, ex-NTF, GTVA Vasudans, SOC, mercenaries, pirates, ex-Regulus Syndicate, you name it) is forced to flee through a Knossos to an uncharted region of space and close the gate behind them.

There they would encounter the Chalgasi.

I had in mind for the Chalgasi to still not have shielding technology, but since they evolved in an extremely metal-rich system, all their ships (older ones especially) would have very thick armor plating.

Newer ships would begin to exhibit a more artistic flair, adding distinctive "plumage" -- essentially translucent subobjects that look somewhat like Japanese fans -- and exhibiting some measure of radial symmetry.

Earlier Chalgasi warships would use railguns as their main anticap armaments; however, since they had expanded to other systems by the time the Wanderers run into them, there would already be expanding usage of beam weaponry (particularly in the newest vessels). Fighters and bombers would be in the midst of undergoing a similar changeover from railguns as secondaries, to missiles and bombs.

If i get access to a scanner I'll scan pictures of what I envision the Chalgasi themselves and their ships looking like.

For a new species of ships, there's always Taristin's Lizard ships.  He doesn't have capital ships yet however.

Yeah. Tis why it'll never be made. :P

Though, I should mention it would have been from the perspective of an NTF pilot and wouldn't have any of the fancy-schmancy weaponry you're used to as an SOC or GTVA pilot. You'd have used Rebel Bombs and Prom-R's and been damn glad you had them! :p

But eh. Not worth elaborating on.

It's not like that idea has never been thought of before or since. :blah:

Yeah, but still; Even Bomber admits it. I'm not saying it's bad, i'm just saying it might be worth mixing it up a little to segregate his campaign from Noise's. Anyway, given he's not even making it, this whole discussion is neither here nor there.

I like it Gundam. I think the main idea you gotta hold onto is the question over what action the GTVA will take when the shivans arrive. And I think it works far better to have it as the full GTVA, not some lost fleet that really has no choice but to ally with the new races. Could be very interesting; whether to commit to a full scale intervention, to try and wipe them out GTI style before the shivans arrive, or just to limited interference to try and keep the shivans away from GTVA space. I would say one thing though. Instead of (if you do go ahead with this) trying to model 2 completely new races from scratch have a look round for existing ones. I know exotic ships are hard to come by but there must be enough to at least fill in the basic slots for each fleet.

I'll say it again, cool idea.
Watch out for the Guns! They'll getcha!

More species? There will be another species in Inferno..it has a 150km long ship(it's just a background bitmap,d'oh).

There are too many post-Capella campaigns and many of them have similar storylines. Every FS fan has his own version of the post-Capella era in his mind, like me. The Southern Cross is another post-Capella campaign. Operation Exorcist is another post-Capella campaign.Steadfast is another post-Capella campaign... Except for BR,everyone makes post-Capella campaigns.

Taristin has two new species the Bek'Tah and the lizards.  Unfortunatly he has no capital ships yet.

@Freespacegundam,
That would make for a very thought provoking campaign.  I second BS403's suggestion.  I've seen some of Raa's ships, and they are excellent.  There are still more models out there, many of which never made it into campaigns.  Scour and see what you can find.  Good storytelling is a dying art, and yours sounds like a good one.
