3DS Max Help - What Happened?
Working on remaking the Manta from Tachyon the Fringe in
3DS Max 7... got the model to the point where it looked fairly
good...

Before Examples/caps:

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d1/GuardianZinv/Tachyon/MantaFinished.png

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d1/GuardianZinv/Tachyon/screen.png

Sorry about the second image, it the only one I have before it went wrong.

Saved copies before rendering to texture. Went to render to texture and it did not
produce anything, but the active model was turned gery and most of the textures were ripped off.
Closed that and returned to my previous saves, and now they all look extremely pixelated, or simply not
right - even though the thumbnail preview shows it as fine.

After Examples:

http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d1/GuardianZinv/Tachyon/screen2.png

With this, how do I get it back to "normal" instead of this pixelated mass?
I'm guessing that a setting changed somewhere and hoping it didn't effect all the
work I did permanently in some way.

I'm just a hair over "installing the program" fresh as to knowledge concerning Max.

Any ideas?

Ugh nevermind... strange, could this be a driver problem?

Are you sure the textures didn't get altered?

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
ok heres what you do

collapse to the top-most modifier on the ship mesh
open the rtt window
pick a renderer (i tend to use something with raytrace and hi in it)
make sure the ship is selected
make sure projection mapping is off
select automatic unwrap (use the chanel it gives you)
in output, add a diffuse map
in selected element common settings, check enable choose a name and make sure its in the diffuse slot
disable automatic map size, instead use 1024
in baked material settings, output into source
select keep baked materials
hit render
ship may look whack, dont be alarmed
youl find a new modifier applied to your ship, click on it and hit edit, confirm your uv map to make sure its not a jumbled mess
under the edit button theres a save button, click it and save the uvw file
collapse to the new modifier
add an unwrap uvw modifier
set map channel to 1
hit load, find that uvw file you saved
collapse to the new modifier
open the material editor
select the first material, should be the baked map
apply it to the whole model and turn it on in the vewport
and youre done, conver the mesh to poly, ad goodies and save as pof

:pimp:

btw this just generates the map, im not sure how to optimise the process so it doesnt end up wasting so much uv space. id like to know, so if anyone knows this stuff better than i do please speak up :D

anyone else think that looks like a pair of con-joined (Sp?) Dragons ?

Like the name of it though. Hmn,  Manta. brings up images of supercars and 80s Rally weapons...

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
Nuke thats what I was thinking, but read the second paragraph, he loaded a previously saved copy. Or at least thats my take of it.

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
it was that modifier he applied, collapse to it (dont clear it that tends to make matters worse) and it should fix it. i was actually able to reproduce and fix the problem that way. the textures getting ripped away and greyed out are normal, you have to re-apply the baked material, and load the new uvw map into the first map channel.

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
Thats really odd... if the textures weren't changed... how come do the older versions (from what it sounds like, before he baked) were damaged?

Closed that and returned to my previous saves, and now they all look extremely pixelated, or simply not
right - even though the thumbnail preview shows it as fine.

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
Razor and I finally got it...

Even though we did go somewhat of the long route to get it back,
I found some things I decided to tweak a little more so the work was worth it.

So the Manta's back in one piece and ready to go. Thanks guys.
On a side note the ship is fairly nice, as in one ship pack release you can mount
4 railguns and 50 rockets to it and it has nearly the life of a Demon pirate ship.
My favorite next to the Battleaxe.

Here's another little something to enjoy - my second transfer the "Corvus."
http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d1/GuardianZinv/Tachyon/CorvusDisplay.png

Two in a row, must be doing something right :)

But I wouldn't mind knowing an answer to Scooby's question there...
and yes they were all pre-bake copies...

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
i see 2 things that could cause this:

somehow max jkicked down the display textuere resolution
-or-
somehow max decided to display a different map channel than should be displayed (you can change em with unwrap uvw).

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
Well I'm back yet again with a somewhat similar issue.

This time it's the Phoenix, and the textures do not want to apply correctly.

As with all the ships I'm doing - I'm applying textures by faces - selecting each face until I have a
group, applying texture, showing in viewport, and adjusting it in the material editor/coordinates panel.

No matter what I've done to this thing though, the texture when applied appears either
super blurry, or after fiddling with the cooridinate controls - it's not fitting the faces correctly.
I've also done the usual... rotate 180 degrees as is normal with all these textures...

So the only thing I can guess at, is a imporper UV map. We've tried re-exporting the model, but there
is no change in it.

What can I do to it to reset it so I can go back to applying/adjusting textures?
This is the last of the Gal Span series of fighter class ships fron Tachyon, all the others are in-FS2 or
about to be put in.

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
At first glance that seems to have fixed it....

I reselcted the entire model via polygon - went
modifiers > uv cooridinates > unwrap UVW > reset UVW

I think there were a couple prompts, and I had to "flatten it" or something
like that...

But the center "spine" image up above is now showing up more correctly,
likely just a matter of the material editor cooridinates....

Thanks. I'll see how it works out.

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
Quite honestly, I never use the coordinates system in the material editor. To move parts of the map around, I use UV data...

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
Is there a particular benefit from using UV Data?

If we use the system to apply the textures to the map channels
so they basically fit themselves right to the model - takes like
10 mins vs. my 3-4 hours. The end result for one reason or another
doesn't look as good as when I do it - and it seems to be less editable
since each map is then "locked" in a way...

Honestly some parts just don't look good at all, and they have to be
recreated, since NL's textures, in some cases, where plain ugly or too small.
So I'd rather fix it one section at a time.

Here's the completed Poseidon...

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
i find that most of the ships ive seen have been converted with the correct mapping (for the most part, a few bugs do exist), only the materials and map channels are screwed. i bet its better to apply all the materials first, and deal with the uv bugs after the correct textures are applied to all surfaces and before baking.

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
Personally I would merge the textures and apply their specific uv map section for the mesh one piece at a time rather than using baking. Baking leaves an unslightly mess that nearly impossible to edit.  Also when you use one texture moving the texture offset is useless.

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
i dont like baking much eigher, its hella ineffieteint. but its good when importing modlels and not having a whole lot of experience.

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
True... but collapsing a bunch of smaller textures into one large one is very easy, and uvmapping is usually quite simple too.... Maybe I should do a tutorial on that too   :drevil:

Re: 3DS Max Help - What Happened?
it would help, uv-ing is rather trickey for most people to understand, let alone work with effectively with it.

in max i usually apply my smoothgroups first
then i select each smoothgroup's polies
roughly uvw map them with the modifier
collapse all
use unwrap uvw's editor to fine tune, scale, and place each section in its proper location, or in a temporary spot if i want to do further work on it later
then collapse all
repeating that process till all sections are mapped.
when all projections are done i sometimes manually tweak the uvw map with unwrap uvw->edit, for final adjustment to get as many pixels on to the polies as possible and to render a template. i do this mainly on capships with alot of sections.

truspace had a similar aproach but with completely different tools/terminology.

you guys with the tachyon mod might want to try, on some easy ships, to make a spliced bitmap in a paint program (you can even use mspaint, if youre desprate). and uv map the sections to it. you might find it alot easyer to deal with.
