Re: My *ahem* Tribute to Windows Vista ;)
What's the backwards compatability like? Can I play all my XP games on Vista? What about applications like Photoshop, Macromedia products and so on?
Almost all of the games I have work. There was a small glitch with starcraft, and GTA2 didnt work, but I dont suspect many people still play those at this point. The issues may have also been resolved already.

I hope RA2 Yuri's Revenge works well on Vista. I may or may not go back to modding that game in time to come... Starcraft glitch? Of what sort, if no one minds me asking? (I don't play that game, but a friend does, and he's close to getting a new computer).

Re: My *ahem* Tribute to Windows Vista ;)
I had an error during installation, but I was having issues with drivers at the time, so it's likely resolved. Havent tested, as I dont play SC enough to care.

My latest addiction is Anarchy Online... and that runs flawlessly. >..>;;

It depends on how badly those games were programmed. Phtoshop ? Check. All major apps work fine. Hell, even FS SCP works fine.

Is a 1Ghz CPu and 1GB+ Ram really all that much more than you have now? :wtf:

For me, the RAM is. I've been running on 512MB for a long time now (and that's with 2x 256 MB sticks in a mobo with only two slots). So for Vista I'd have to either buy all new RAM, or a completely new system.
Minimum standard for most PC's are 1Gb now. Honestly, I dont know how you can have XP and 512 Mb ram, and do much more than surf the internet (with IE) (FF uses a lot of ram on its own...)

I do it fine. I can even play UT2004 with full graphics effects very well, and I can manage BF2 barely playable (relatively smooth frame rate)  with full graphics (if all other applications are closed). I use FS2SCP with pretty much all features on and it runs fine. All my motherboard is is 1.8Ghz, with an AGP graphics card. (ATI 9550)

Of course, if someone gave me a 1gb memory, sure I would use it...

EDIT: the only thing I'm trying to bash is Microsoft Firefox. Regular FF is fine.

dang it... I always fall for crap like that...

me = gullible x 86

I don't know anything about IE7. I gave up on anything IE about two and a half years ago.

Re: My *ahem* Tribute to Windows Vista ;)
As I'm running windows vista enterprise edition, i can say with delight that free space 2 works just fine.

Even with all the mods, so does source, even though you need to start it with admin privileges (you can set it by right clicking the shortcut / exe and then selecting run as administrator)

In fact, the only problem iv had with windows vista is, if you install the latest AC97 sound card drivers, it crashes windows explorer when trying to open Control panel.

want me to get you a screen shot of free space2 running in vista in windows mode? with fps counter?

You only need admin privs because you must have it installed on the same partition as the OS. And FS cant write its ibx's or log files without permission... Otherwise, you dont need to run it as an admin.

Your sound driver issue sounds a lot like my video card issue, Which is asically poor support from the manufacturer (in my case ATi).

It needs to run as admin in order to write to the registry the first time however.  Or Maybe that's the launcher, I forget.

I have completely gotten used to UAC. I used to hate it at first, but now I actually feel more comfortable with it, because I know it offers me a great deal of additional protection. One side effect is if you accidentally launch a program you don't want to - often times you can cancel out of it with UAC.

I usually simply right click and "run as admin" when installing any program or driver for the first time, and that's usually enough to avoid most problems. As programs get written to be UAC-aware, the need for this should be less and less.

Well, realtek has won a award for there vista support, but i still cant tell how.

Vista its self is very nice, i doubt i will go back to Xp, i don't see it asking for admin privileges as a problem, in-fact i to have come to welcome it.

Iv been getting used to the extended features and they to are very welcome, yet there voice recognition software leaves a lot to be desired.

PS nvidia have released new drivers for vista 5/1/2007 with added support for using nvidia control panel from right clicking the desk top

Re: My *ahem* Tribute to Windows Vista ;)
Indeed. I like being informed something needs permission to install. ATi is the only snag in my experience with vista. Everything else (except the time expiration on the mpeg2 decoder in media center ...*grumble*) has won me over.

How about the DRM nonsense that comes with Vista? Does that show itself any time?

Re: My *ahem* Tribute to Windows Vista ;)
I like the way "Run as Administrator" is on the context menus now. As someone who runs Windows in a multi-user environment where we don't want people to have administrator privilages this annoys me no end. It's not that the students will suddenly figure out our admin passwords because the option is there on the menus. Rather that this further encourages people to write software that runs as administrator only.
Be warned: This site's admins stole 100s of hours of my work. They will do it to you.

Re: My *ahem* Tribute to Windows Vista ;)
Well i got a nice Email from Realtek customer support about there Ac97 driver, it appears that you can only use it to its full potential if you turn off "user account manager" there by completely undermining the new security features that come with admin privileges.

I think you will find that in a multi user environment, the only person with "run as administrator" in the right click menu, is the administrator.

Nope. It really doesnt effect you unless you're using an HD-DVD or a BluRay disk...

That is not to say that you can't set media player to right protect your music files, but you can disable this immediately, as I did, in WMP11.

I just recently purchased a Radeon X1950 XTX so I'm planning on getting Vista sometime this year... I hope. Just don't know which version I want.

Hopefully ATi has better drivers by the time you get vista. Right now, my 1950xt is good for only windowed d3d... :(

But if I am Administrator, shouldn't "run as administrator" simply be... "run"?
