Capship gauntlet or training mission?
Hi all...new poster here, loooove what the SCP has accomplished (I stopped playing FS2 a while back, probably around when the SCP was just starting to come together, so this has been a treat to play the improved version). As I've been reintroducing myself to the FS2 universe, I wanted to see if anyone had developed a gauntlet or training mission that threw capital ships at you instead of fighters? I seem to recall one of the Star Wars space sims had something similar, but other than me trying to set up one in FRED (which I understand doesn't play nice with SCP mods), I've never seen that same arrangement for FS2.

What I'd like to be able to do is simply pick a ship (fighter or bomber) and weapon loadout, jump into the mission, and have a Cain pop out ready for a fight. And after I knock it down, then have a Lilith come along, and then a Rak, and so on. No Shivan fighter escorts, although it'd be nice to have my own wing to practice managing and sending in against specific points. You get the idea...

Has anyone done one of these before? Would it be a hassle to create? If someone with the smarts to gin the mission up would do it, I would imagine that a lot of us would like to use it to play with weapon combos or just to practice strafing and bombing runs. Call it "Strike University" or something along those lines. Anyway, thanks for listening.  :yes2:

Made in 15 minutes. No guarantees it works. But it should. Unless it doesn't. In which case it isn't working.

And BTW:

Main beam cannon, fire for effect!

Welcome to HLP! Exits are located to the right, left, up, down, and 4th-dimensionally. However all of them are blocked, except the 4-d one, and no one's yet figured how to reach it. You might try the ducts if you're desparate to leave, but beware Carl, our resident Shivan. Throw him your lunch and he may leave you alone. Flamethrowers are located underneath all seats; budgets have recently been reduced due to politics. Other weapons are located in the secure lockers, but only and admin, , or hyper-intelligent shade of blue may open them. Thank you and enjoy your stay~!

I seem to recall one of the Star Wars space sims had something similar,

it was "TIE Fighter".. TIE Bomber training No. 2 or 3 I guess... (the good old days)

I remember something similar also in X-Wing vs TIE Fighter. It was called something like "Customized Dogfighting" (you could choose, inspecting containers, to face fighters or capships, IIRC).

That's the one...I sometimes got a kick out of cheat-coding invulnerability and then flying right up to the bow of a Star Destroyer and watching the view get completely obscured with turbolaser bolts.

Re: Capship gauntlet or training mission?
Some years ago I did a similar mission (only against Shivan fighters). It was my first (and only) mission, apart from the walkthrough, but I can't find it...

Re: Capship gauntlet or training mission?
Very nice.  Thank you!  I don't suppose you could take some more requests?  Like give us the ability to fill out our wing?

Also, I wonder how tough it would be to make a Freespace Port version of this (and conversely, convert the Freespace Port Gauntlets to Freespace 2).  Any takers?

That has been done in v3.0 of the Port.

Re: Capship gauntlet or training mission?
i remember when i just had the demo; i would play the guantlets to pass the time. the first terran wing always kicked my team's but though.....  :ick:
Sig nuked! New one coming soon!

Re: Capship gauntlet or training mission?
OK, it's about 85% of what I wanted...the only thing that it would benefit from is being able to use the rest of Alpha Wing. But I just spent quite a while in an Erinyes pouring Trebs, Tornadoes, Kayser, and Maxim fire into everything up to a Moloch. Then after I killed that one (which took FOREVER), I was reloading when I got rear-ended by a Demon charging out of hyperdrive. Whoopsie... :ick:

Re: Capship gauntlet or training mission?
As a matter of fact, the newest builds of FRED can use mods by means of the command line.
For instance:
Code: [Select]
C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fred2_open_3_6_9.exe -mod mediavps-fredhtl -glow -spec -jpgtgaHere I'm using the mediavps folder as my mod directory, though really any folder in your FS2 directory can work for this.

Hey, I'm happy to be wrong. :) I thought I'd read that somewhere.

Re: Capship gauntlet or training mission?
Thanks again for this...I just worked out a new no-lock turret killing pass.  And then took on the Cain in a Pegasus. Wheee!
