I've been enjoying my new install, but I notice that I never see lens flares (which are very cool of course).
Instead, I always see glare when looking at a bright object.

I've seen lens flares in screenshots, so is this preponderance of glare due to the latest build or is it decided by the authors of each mod?

it was a feature added in many a year ago, you just need the proper files to do it.

Those are handled via Stars.tbl... Unfortunately the wiki entry conserning the flares isnt exactly the clearest possible.

I don't have a Stars.tbl in my install so that explains it.
In fact I have no .tbl files at all. Is this normal?

You have them, but they are packed into vp files.

And in basic install you do not have every possible table available simply because they have been introduced by the SCP.

To open the VP files use VP View or something similar. Read Karajorma's FreeSpace FAQ.
