George W. pushing the envelope on US spying
"W pushes envelope on U.S. spying"
Quote
WASHINGTON - President Bush has quietly claimed sweeping new powers to open Americans' mail without a judge's warrant, the Daily News has learned.

The President asserted his new authority when he signed a postal reform bill into law on Dec. 20. Bush then issued a "signing statement" that declared his right to open people's mail under emergency conditions.

In completely unrelated news, lots of people haven't been getting their Victoria's Secret catalogues.

I think history has shown us that handing considerably more power to ones leadersfor use when under "emergency conditions" never has good consequences.

This year, both Groundhog Day and the State of the Union Address occurred during the same week.  This is an ironic juxtaposition of events--one involves a meaningless ritual in which we look to a creature of little intelligence for prognostication, while the other involves a groundhog.
