If the ship completely eclipsed the sun behind it, that would be okay then. 
When the sun is only partially eclipsed, do you see any detail on the moon?
No, you just see this shadow
Its because the sun is so bright, it makes the moon seem dark..
Try pointing a bright light at yourself, then slowly move a small object in front of it...
