The biggest problem in TFTD is that there are holes in the research tree, which can easily put you into an unwinnable dead end.  Then you have to restart the game and keep a close eye on the cheat sheet so you don't research yourself into a corner. :sigh:

Really? I had no idea it was that bad. I wonder how many hours I wasted trying to fight off lobstermen while I researched in circles. I seem to remember having researched everything (or so I thought) once, but I thought I needed to find some item or alien to progress further, but gave up when I had no luck.. this was ages ago though. Hmm.

Hmm, cool thanks guys. I'll steer clear of the glitches. Shame MicroProse didn't do as superb of a job with TFTD and other X-Com games as they did with the original. A lot of people have tried to re-make and re-live that dream with mods, etc.

I'm guessing Julian Gallop was lost somewhere along the line, and along with that, the heart of XCom was lost.

There's Xenocide, which was a X-COM 1 remake somebody on sourceforge was doing, but I don't know if it's still going.

Heh, I just had a flashback to playing Pong on the Binatone, I'd forgotten about that, it also had this rather simplistic shooting game which was fun :)

Appears to be little activity since mid-2006?

I've been following this closely, and I've already managed to get the Magnetic Ion Armor and the M.C. Lab.. but I think I might've screwed myself because I researched Zbrite or something without having any Sub Construction.. but I'll have to double check. Also, I tend to buy extra troops and send them into the slaughter every couple of missions, so I haven't had to deal with truckloads of lobstermen yet. *phew!*

Re: the most fun game played (classic games only)
Wow, okay, so the alien colonies or bases are freakin' ridiculous. I barely eliminated all the aliens on the surface without taking too many losses, but I got down below and my entire squad got rocked by lobster men and floating brains that turn you into zombie thingies. Guess I won't try to take it out until I have molecular control, or I'll just have to accept losing the majority of my squad.  :doubt:

Re: the most fun game played (classic games only)
Alright,

Hungry Horace
Delta Wing
Volcan Planet
...and others whose name I don't remember any more!

The Great Giana Sisters (Commodore 64, gotta love the music)
Boulder Dash
Archon
Ikari Warriors
Turrican

Falcon 3.0 Gold (countless hours wasted playing this one)
Anyone here playing Falcon 4.0? I'm suprised so few modern games have dynamic campaigns. If they could manage to put this in first person shooters maybe I would find them interesting also...

F-15 Strike Eagle III
Gunship 2000 (I didn't really like Jane's Longbow)
Wing Commander I & II (surprised that nobody mentioned this, I never managed to find WGIII)
Molez (great multiplayer game, during college we had four persons sitting behind one keyboard playing this)
Duke Nukem 3D (there is XP compatibility mod including graphics improvements)
Dune II
Descent I and II
Leisure Suit Larry (deserves a mention as a classic on the grounds of captivating many pubelescent males and forever ruining their lives)
Willy Beamish
Monkey Island series
One Must Fall 2097

Then realizes something...

//Simpsons voice on
I've wasted my life
//Simpsons voice off

Actually NOT! It's surprising how much you can do if you don't watch TV so much...

Re: the most fun game played (classic games only)
Yeah, that one too.

The first Worms and Worms+ were good. I never liked the graphics of the following releases. Molez was this kind of game also, but instead of self destruction, the moles disintegrated quite colorfully.
