so i'm thinking of becoming a FREDer for the second time, since the first time i diden't have a reason to (since i diden't know about HLPBB or that freespace 2 was even known at the time). but, now i do. since i got people to enjoy missions i make and the FRED academy. but, since back in the day i diden't know about fred 2 open, i need to re-acquaint myself by asking you: what is differant about fred 2 open and the original FRED? thanks in advance.

P.S. talk about a lot of talking before getting to the point...

I'm unsure of the specifics, but it allows for several extra SEXP's (as well as some useless SEXP's were gotten rid of), as well as allowing a wider range of texture formats, hi-res files, etc etc. The only consistent thing I've seen wrong with it is you cannot type in SEXP's. You have to maunally select them from the lists, which is a bit of a pain, but doesn't really slow you down.

In all honesty, you won't notice too much of a difference (at least I didn't...).

They allow you to create better missions. You can create cutscenes, you have more options for basically everything...if you aren't good with backgrounds, you can have an awesome bg with just writing "starfield.pof" in skybox from the background section...

The graphics are better...when I open FRED2 I say "Damn I worked 3 months with this?"

FRED Open is a must.

ok sounds good. what about the tables thing? in fact, what is a table?

Tables are large hunks of code that determine many things. Probably the most commonly edited one is ships.tbl, which is the code for every ship model in the game. They can be found in the Root VP and edited with NotePad/WordPad. Just a big, huge warning: Tables are very specific as to how the code should be entered, and if even a single character is off it can screw up entire missions. So if you do want to edit them... be extremely careful. I'd reccommend reading up on them in the FS Wiki, which has pretty detailed info on each one.

ok, thanks for the info. i'm thinking of making a campaign using inferno after i finish re-acquanting myself. just gotta know: is there anything i should know about making campaigns, and campaigns including new ships and mods?

Inferno sure is a popular mod to make things for nowadays.  :p

I'm not sure exactly what you do or do not know... like I said read up on tables, and most ship downloads now come with a readme informing you how to install it.

As for making a campaign... it'll take waaay longer than you think it will.  :p
I started mine a long time ago, and am only just coming up on the first release (no, I will not give anyone a date of release... I simply don't know).

ya.....it took long enough to make one mission..and with my lack of ideas it could take the whole year  :nervous:

I'm just getting back into FS2 with the arrival of the BTRL demo. I'm impressed by the continued development of FS2 and would like to try out Fred2 open. I'm looking for a download link.

You should be able to find FRED2 where ever you got FS2_Open from. I know for certain it's in the BtRL download and there is no reason whatsoever why you can't copy that version to your FS2 folder and use it if you don't already have a copy (Just don't use the reset-orders SEXP as it won't work with 3.6.9 Official).
