I recently downloaded a copy of gmax... I see that cursor moving towards lock Mr.Admin, but first, take a look here: http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/gmax_index.html
Anyway, so I was wondering... is there some way to get .gmax files to .pof somehow, even if it's something like ->3ds->cob->pof...because Gmax is THE free Freespace modelling tool if so...
EDIT: Yes, used search, but is there more RECENT info?

By the way, how do convert 3ds or dxf to cob so that it can be put into FS2? (3DS Max does not seem to support the saving of cob's)

You need to understand how Gmax works.

Gmax is free to modders but you'll notice that you can only save in the Gmax file format. The reason you can't save in any other format is that discreet (the company who make Gmax) licences their SDK for Gmax to the game developers who use it to program Gmax plugins which you use to output whatever model format is used in the game.

So Gmax is pretty much useless without the SDK. Blender can do everything it can and it can save in many different formats to boot so until someone gets their mitts on the SDK Gmax is nothing more than a glorified low poly modelmaker...

With the SDK the sky is the limit

Well, there's 3D Exploration. Also, truSpace imports both .3ds and .dxf. TS5 does anyway.

Yeah but there's only one glaring problem with that. Gmax doesn't save 3ds files, it saves it's own unique format files.

I know. Cp's Q, as i read it, was how to get .3ds (and .dxf) ---> .cob.

Check sourceforge for a converter plugin...if not i'll keep my eyes peeled.

.GMAX is probably just a messed up .MAX file with some of the chunks hacked out.

Thanks; I need to try to get hold of 3D Exploration then, since I don't have TS.

Very likely. It's probably just '.max lite' if you know what I mean. This may mean that it's easier to reverse engineer the file format.

Here's hopin'

I took a look at it, gmax files have much more "garbage" than a similar 3ds file.  I made a 1x1x1 cube and they looked different

edit:

I also looked at the file sizes and 115kb for a simple cube seems a little off.
