Aion fighter release, and request for 3d help
Ok folks here's DaBrain's fighter the Aion (an old design).

It's shielded, temp textures (painted on), glows, and thruster points, rearming dock point.
It has 2 primaries guns of 2 and 4 banks and dual secondary banks of 4 banks each.

Use or alter an existing table... (download at bottom of post)

Ok now that's done (despite my lack of real skills)... I have a request to make.

I just got access back to my old hard drive and have TONS of random ships that need someone who can model to take a look at. I'm not asking for a texturer or even a turreter, just someone who is willing to look at the model(s) and instead of just saying "X is wrong with it" just fix the darn things and I will carry it to the next steps as best I can...  I got years of stuff accumulated and an equal amount of frustration.

99% of the content was never slated towards FS2 universe but are from other genres (known or original) but hopefully that won't turn people off.

I'm no longer looking for high poly versions of these models because 1.) no one has time to make them, and 2.) having something NOW is better than having nothing at all!

If anyone is interested in helping out on a model by model basis (one at a time piece work) I'm not asking for a dedicated commitment for massive projects, just if you would do a ship. If you can do another or more later fine but I'm sick of random pm's here and on GW and then never hear from these people again (like Merlin and others)...

Pls reply here in public. ty.

I will try to accommodate preferences from known content or original stuff in my database. If there is any genre you Don't want to work on let me know. You could be working on a mech one time or a space battleship, or a super dread, or even a space monster/ asteroid base, etc...

What did you originally model this ship in? I tried to do some fixing up on it in trueSpace but it has some seriously nasty geometry issues. Amazing that you got it to convert to POF.

It's a neat design but over-detailed and almost but not quite symmetrical. I tried to slice it down the middle so I could simplify it a bit then mirror it, but the geometry problems would take ages to cure, if it's even possible.

Like I posted, this is DaBrain's ship and for my purposes it's fine, this was a RELEASE...

I turned it over to the Trek Community for a retexturing (the've done some amazing fighters).

If you are interested in helping out I will send you one or two ships if you tell me your preferences...

Re: Aion fighter release, and request for 3d help
The Aion is such an interesting ship, I decided to rebuild it from the origin up. :) In the attached pic is tonight's progress on the right and the major chunks of the ship on the right.

The underside of the wing is closer to the original, the upper side needs quite a bit more work. I started with a cube and began with the rearmost point of the wing, working my way forward and around.

When I'm done, the ship will look substantially the same but will have a hell of a lot fewer faces and vertexes. (Non-screwy geometry included at no extra charge.) I probably won't do any of the details on the leading and trailing edges of the wings but I will do those canard-ish bump outs on the sides of the nose.

The .scn file as shown in the pic is in the zip file. Also included in the zip is the original COB from your download- with the axes rotated to normal and the whole ship rotated and moved just a tad so it'll actually be flying straight forward, or at least straight forward according to the major central edges on the upper side. :)

One major thing to keep in mind when modeling ships for games like FS2 is that having a load of vertexes really close together is pointless. Nobody will be able to see that, it makes it harder for even the hottest PC to render, and it's especially hellish for texturing.

For game models, unless it's something that really sticks out, it's usually better to put it in the texture(s).

(Image and zip file on hold until a moderator flushes or enlarges the upload folder.)

Re: Aion fighter release, and request for 3d help
Here it is, the Aion rebuilt. A heck of a lot fewer polygons, which will go up a bit when fully triangulated in POF format but still will be nowhere near the original count. Adding guns to the nose and canards will add a few more, but I'll leave that up to someone else. In the ZIP are three versions of the rebuild. Two are identical except for the back edge of the wings. The canopy, wing weapon things and the wing engine exhausts are seperate pieces.

The outermost parts of the wings, the tip of the nose, the tail between the main engines and the back end of the main engines are identical. Various vertexes around the rest of it are also in the identical positions, though sometimes connected in different directions.

The worst of it was the leading edge of the wings, which in the original bears a striking resemblance to crumpled tinfoil. ;) My initial work there looked too flat and vertical, so I pulled out an edge along the top, which I didn't really notice until this rendering integrates the wing lines all the way forward to the nose in an almost perfect V shape. :)

The third variant, I did a bunch of work to further smooth things, reduce the number of faces and made some changes like angling sides around the recessed blue spots. I made the nose a bit bulkier, it looked a bit thin to me, and deleted the canard gun mounts.

Finally, the original is in there- tweaked to align its main axis straight forward instead of being angled slightly off to one side.

Re: Aion fighter release, and request for 3d help
Looks great!

Oh and you're not the only one who found the design interesting. It's being reworked on two other sites! :D

Not bad for basicly a throwaway model? It was really off axis and past the centerline a milimeter and I had to rotate it as close as I could to striaght and then it was still a little "off". Still it came out fine for me Hehe.
